Hey all.

I'm thinking about getting a 30" (2560x1600) LCD. I'm having trouble deciding which one to get. It's mostly going to be used for gaming. I won't watch TV on it or anything.

My choices are:

HP LP3065 - $1260
LG LGW300H - $1240
Samsung 305T - $1200
Dell 3008WFP - $2140 (sometimes ~$1700) (tax inc)
Dell 3007WFP-HC - $1500 (tax inc)

If you had to get one of these, which would you pick? The 3008 looks amazing, but it's expensive. I've never been impressed with a Samsung display, but I've never seen the 305T. I love my HP Plasma TV, could their LCD monitor be great too?

What are your thoughts? I'm thinking of buying by the end of the month.

Thanks!

When I had the same choice a couple months ago I decided on the HP. Same screen as the 3007WFP-HC but it has 3 DVI inputs instead of 1 like the Dell. Haven't heard much about the LG monitor so I can't comment on that. The 3008 is too much $$ IMO so I didn't consider it seriously. The 305T also looked promising but I couldn't find it for a good deal when I was looking.

Here is a review of the 3007WFP-HC vs. 305T.

You may consider looking for a monitor on Ebay. With the 25% cashback you could find a very good deal.

Chaotic I just began my search/research for a 30" monitor mostly for gaming and more real estate for work related reasons. Based on what I have discovered thus far I am leaning towards the Dell 3008WFP b/c its an IPS panel and greater color ranges. Should I be able to get it for $1500 or less its a done deal. I hope they drop the prices soon.

well the best they can get right now is 2 x 4870x2's for Quad-Crossfire, but that'd be quit an expensive setup.

a single 4870x2 should make most games playable at native res with the right settings.

I'd go with that LGw300, I know LG makes some pretty good and fast IPS panels

QFT. LG makes amazing monitors.

Did you see the specs of the LG ? Viewing angles 170°(H) / 170°(V) and 5ms response time, that looks (oddly enough) like a TN panel ?!

Didn't LG and a few others get fined for monitor panel price fixing? Maybe they'll lower the price once the dust settles.

I love my Dell 3007WFP-HC because it is a great SIPS panel and it goes on sale sometimes for $1099 Which is what I got mine for a few months ago. I don't know if they fixed the scaler issue on the 3008, you'll have to research. If they didn't fix it, and you play games, you're going to get bad input lag.

Also my single GTX 280 is just fine for everything I throw at my Dell 3007WFP-HC, the only game I had to lower setting on was Crysis. You don't need quad crossfire with 2 4870X2's lol. A single upcoming GTX 290 should be even better and more than enough.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I should go into some background here.

I currently have two 24" Dell monitors: a 2405 and a 2407. The 2407 is nice, but has horrible ghosting. The 2405 has been a joy to own. I'd be using the 30" to play games like WoW, Supreme Commander, Battlefield 2, etc.

Currently I have a 7800GTX. It has one dual-link DVI port, so I could put the 30" on it, and the other two 24" monitors on a spare card. I will be upgrading at some point, I'm just not sure when.

I'm leaning toward the LG panel since this will be mostly for gaming. I'm sure it will be fine for the moderate amount of content creation I do at home.

I saw the 3008 on sale yesterday, but now it's back to up $2000.

I have both a 3007 and 3008 at work (pic here) and my 3008 has input lag. It is more noticeable when using the "video" inputs (HDMI, component) and not as much so using the DVI. Noticeable, as in the first time I saw it, I was like "WTF, is this a Windows glitch?"

Do you ever game on the 3008? If so, what do you think and would you still recommend it for gaming?

FYI...I would be using a 4870X2 to power the beast.

I have a bit, and it is okay. As I said, input lag not bad through DVI input, I think maybe because it doesn't have to scale the picture.

I still haven't seen a good review of the LG.

I wonder when we'll move past 2560x1600 on the desktop...

You guys are not making this easy...LOL. While I have the 2407WFP now I remember reports on the back lighting issues and I am sure mine is no better but I like the monitor (and plan to keep it). Given all of the credible opinions the best option may be to simply pick one based upon my perceived advantages and live happily ever after. Hmmm...decisions...decisions...

I don't know about gaming, but for general usage the HP is an awesome monitor. My gf uses one for some of her graphic design work... It provides awesome results for print work after I calibrated it. Generally she only runs through two prints before it's finalized.

We also use it as a TV/360 and I haven't noticed anything significant on it. Although we only really play guitar hero, saints row 2, and lego games on the monitor/tv.

Love my 3007 WFP-HC, have never regretted it or wished I bought another monitor. It's been a great gaming panel, and IMO the single biggest thing you can do to improve your gaming immersion.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know this is an old thread. Chaotic which monitor did you choose and how do you like it?

Prices on the Dell 3008WFP are much better now. I recently missed the $1,300 with free shipping deal. Now that I am ready the LD is OOS at NewEgg. Anyway, just interested in your opinion.
