Think of it as a preemptive strike. We cannot take chances in todays world. She isn't one of "us" anyway.

"In addition to being ordered to attend a special disciplinary class for seven days, the girl was removed as president of the student council and honor society."

"They just want the punishment to fit the crime," he said. "This was an innocent mistake on her part and they are treating it as if it were the second coming of the hijackers."

But we'll let heinous criminals off with barely a slap on the wrist. Our entire Judicial system is an absolute Fvcking joke and getting worse everyday. Keep laughing world, yes it's a joke over here.

really the only case they have is the due process one. there is basically no due process in schools. she did take a 2" knife into school, which was a dumb idea. just because you're ignorant of rules doesn't mean they don't apply to you.

their daughter's pencil sharpener came to a teacher's attention after another student borrowed it, used it to sharpen a pencil and left it on a desk.

in that case the kid who borrowed the weapon of mass destruction and subsequently launched a terrorist attack on a cylindrical arboreal byproduct, should also be suspended retroactively and sent to guantanamo bay with the rest of the little future terrorists

the school district isn't claiming she is a terrorist

Agreed. The punishment doesn't fit the crime, but I see no problem with at least taking it away; it's not an appropiate version of a sharpener.

Okay, that's just stupid, but as the article pointed out, this is what happens when you institute a zero-tolerance policy. The article fails to state the policy itself, so we have no way of knowing if the student got the minimum sentence or not.

One could argue that the student should have asked the teacher if the sharpener was a "legal" item to have in school, but...this is just silly.

Yes, in these troubled times, we can't take any chances. That student, or "junior terrorist" as I will refer to her from now on, should have been shot on sight. That's why I believe all teachers should be armed. Any threat, no matter how small, should be neutralized. If a student so much as THINKS they can pull some sh!t in school, their ass will end up in jail so fast their little heads will spin. Thank you. Bush/Cheney in '04! God bless.

the school district isn't claiming she is a terrorist

but obviously she is a terrorist because:

1) she brought a weapon of mass destruction to school

2) foreigner

either one of these conditions would mark her as a terrorist under Deparment of Homeland Defense guidelines

it is only a matter of time before brining a pencil to school classifies as a weapon, they are sharp you know.

Stupid rules(Zero Tolerance/arbitrary consequences without condition) lead to stupid decisions. It wouldn't have taken much to know that this was a pencil sharpener and it was being used as such. That doesn't even seem to matter though, as the Officials seemed fully aware of it, but the rules stated the girl had to be punished so she was. I don't know what is more stupid though, stupid laws or the people who come up with them/choose to live under them?

Dude! She practically brought a box-cutter to class! She could have very easily killed half her class, commandeered the teacher and flew her into the JPMorganChase Tower in downtown Houston! Holy crap, people. Wake UP!

You crazy americans.

Isn't a pencil way more dangerous that a pencil sharpener?

"Now everyone take out a safety pencil and a circle of paper"

Remember the good old days when you could take a fully loaded pistol and your hunting knife to school with you? Either do I... but I bet it was fun.

If I were this little girl, I wouldn't show up to the disciplinary classes. The hell with any high school administration that tells me how to sharpen a pencil...

don't forget to bring your pencil sharpening gun

its a pencil sharpener in the shape of a gun.

you see you insert the pencil into the pencil sharpening barrel, pull the trigger, and blam! your pencil is not a million sharp pieces...

I doubt she would be allowed on a plane with that. From the looks of it one could really mess up anothers face with it.

Their lawyers advise them to treat everyone exactly the same

Which was not done in this case. The other student that had the tool in their possesion while on school grounds should have recieved punishment also. Or is the rule that only the one that brings it is guilty, if so it is not a rule that will stand up in court.

I have seen some fingernails that were just as long and probably just as sharp but they dont prolhibit them in school or on airplanes.

Fingernails sharp enough to sharpen a pencil with... What if you wanted to scratch you arms or something? Wouldn't that be dangerous?

I guess I'm saying that fingernails are not typically filed to a knife-like edge.

you can't just not apply the rules. i could bring a straight razor into a school and shave with it in order to show that it is innocuous and then later slice someone up real good.
