As far as I know, free speech does not apply to inside a school. Its a government institution with its own rules.

I think the principal went overboard. She should have been given a warning not to wear that particular shirt at school again with no permanent mark on her record.

[sarcasm] I heard a school district is banning the number 69 from all its books. [/sarcasm]

Now we have bad numbers?

I used to laugh at the lottery players when would say "that's a good number."

Now, I find out some numbers are bad.

Free speech applies in school. Just because you go into a school doesn't mean your constitutional rights are suspended, only superceded by other priorites.

It ends up being like this (the priority of the school):
1) Safety
2) Providing education
3) Constitutional Rights

As long as the exercising of your rights does not affect those first 2, then you're okay.

Does having an ink on record actually mean anything?
AFAIK, having a 3 or 5 day suspension on your record won't prevent anyone from getting into college, getting scholarships, or getting a job.

Hell, the kid is not even a sophomore.

In 61 years I guess the students will not be allowed to put their year of graduation on thier shirt.

I missed it by a year, my 40th reunion is this summer.

Some Moms are!

My Mom is a very conservative Christian and has lead a pretty sheltered life. I'll never forget the Christmas that I opened a present from her and it was a t-shirt with a couple cues, rack, and pool balls that said "Crazy 8's Pool Hall: We Break for a Nice Rack!". The only thing she said to me was, "Well, I know how much you like playing pool...so I thought you'd like this shirt!"

I explained to her what the shirt meant and I don't think I'd seen my Mom that embarrassed in a loooong time.

Needless to say, I don't get shirts from her at Christmas time any more.

Only a jackass would actually suspend a student for that. I mean, an uptight, kind-of-douche-y-principal would give a stern lecture and make her turn it inside out. But, suspend her? That's a level of jackassery that only the shittiest of shitty administrators can reach.

Dammit, they'd probably send me home for wearing my Equine Drawing Club shirt.

At my HS girls and guys wore much more explicit shirts then that.

What if a player on their football team has the number 69? What then? Does he get suspended every time he wears it to school/practice/games?

No need to suspend the girl, give her the option of wearing it inside out for the day.
