And this was during lunchtime. If you are trying basketball during lunch, that's grounds for suspension. I can see her easily planting a foot in someone's face. Cartwheels you can save for the playground, not for the lunch line.
Deirdre's father, Leland Faegre, said it was absurd to suspend his daughter for doing gymnastics when students were allowed to play basketball and other sports.

Okay? What are you trying to say? They aren't allowing the students to play basketball in the cafeteria, and you shouldn't being doing cartwheels in the cafeteria either.

You're making a few false assumptions there. A lot of schools have a lunch period that consists of eating in a cafeteria and then going outside to play until the lunch period is over. Most students do not take the entire time to eat their lunch, but the school must allot a certain amount of time for it. At least, this is how it was in every one of my schools growing up.

When I was in elementary school, it was called recess.

Correct. Recess was a part of the lunch period. Some elementary schools have 3 recess periods, one in the morning, one in the afternoon (the one immediately following lunch) and one at around 2:00. The writer of the article may have mistaken it for just a lunch period, and called it that. Happens all the time with reporters who don't know all the facts.

C'mon. Why are people lame with answers "Endangering Students". Yeh right. I agree with disobeying, she should be suspended for that, but don't cover it with stupid crap.

Exactly. When I was in school, kids got hurt all the time, but it wasn't this bloated of a deal. Recess was rough, a little 70 pound girl colliding into me doing a cartwheel woulda been nothin'.

Sure, she disobeyed, but SUSPENSION is ridiculous. Sitting in the office for 10 minutes maybe, but suspension is overkill.

I can't wait to see this generation grow up and be so fragile and paranoid that they can't get anything done without the fear of doing something wrong.

Suspension for not listening is a little drastic... but who knows, maybe she had an AK-47

She shouldnt have been suspended but she still should have gotten in some sort of trouble. The school is just looking out for themselves, if she did happen to kick some kid in the face they would probally end up getting sued.

you haven't been around long enough to remember, but everyone thought this kind of thing was really cool like 3 years ago. that is, they thought it was cool until the mods started handing out vacations (sucks up too much bandwidth). so don't be surprised if they give you one, too.

Shouldn't have asked her to stop in the first place.

Rules are rules. I'd be willing to bet that when your kid grows up and starts doing cartwheels in the middle of a restaurant, the mall, etc you'll ask them to stop.

Are you serious? There's a big difference between a mall or a restaurant, and a school.

As a little kid, I remember clearly getting smacked in the face plenty of times by feet, fists, heads, falling off of monkey bars, swing sets, those tall fence baseball catcher things behind home plate, face-to-blacktop, fights, etc... Little kids are virtually indestructible.

A suspension is totally uncalled for. Given that she was warned, a detention or extra homework or something would have sufficed and been more effective. But whatever, all they've accomplished is giving the girl a reward. You think a child gives a sh!t about being not allowed to go to 6th grade for a couple of days? Especially when the parents are on her side?

i actually saw this on the news and they were interviewing the girl and father. First of all I think the school went too far, but something else has to be taken into consideration. The principal have warned the girl to not do it again, she actually thought it was dangerous, that's fine, the little girl got a warning. However the girl kept on performing her carwheels, so she got detention, I guess this was just the last straw. It might've been more than just cartwheels at this point, more like showing the little girl that she should listen to the principal? Another thing, the little girl was being interviewed. She sounded really full of herself saying things like "i dont know what's wrong, i'm trying to train to be in the olympics". Bottom line is, she was warned to not do something and she clearly did not listen.

Yes it does. Every single one of those becomes a lengthy HTML string. How do you think that code gets to your computer, osmosis?

View the source, copy out the section & save it to a text file.

I just created a 48KB text file of nothing but his stupid "art." With three appearances in this thread that's 150K of that garbage.

Whether they were right or wrong for telling her not to do it is debatable.

However, the fact that she continued to do them after being told not to is definately grounds for punishment.

I wish P&N could be a little calmer. This story is obviously not giving us all the details. The remaining details could possible prove that this punishment is BS but I think you will find that the girl was probably doing cartwheels in an unsafe location and has been asked not to at least twice.

Is it too harsh... IMO no. I see a big problem with the dad not admitting that the kid did any wrong at all. If my kid is in Gym class and they are practicing Basket Ball. If she keeps doing different drills than the teacher has told them to do (and the teacher keeps reprimanding) and this ends up in suspension. here is what I would do...

1. I would get her side of the story and the teachers side of the story.
2. I would punish her again when she got home for not obeying the teacher (If it was really the case).

Kids need to learn to respect authority. As a dad, I am not their friend, I am one of their two primary teachers and I am one of their two primary source of ethics and morals. My children will and do respect authority.

For those that are wanting to flame me... Respecting authority does not prevent proper questioning of authority.
