Hey..I dont know about other colleges but I know that at Purdue University, you can purchase one copy of MS office/ XP... etc for 5$. I remember that many other colleges have that kind of deals with MS.

University of Texas at Austin offers the $5 price. However it is 5 Bucks per CD for something like office which has 5 or 6 cds it becomes 25 or 30 bucks. Still a good deal =)

pretty much same $5 deal at all University of Californias, I think it was $5 or $11 last I checked per title, not per CD... of course, you just get CDR's anyway and a license key. the UC contract also has Office X for Macs, Win XP Prof, and other oft used apps for similar prices
