i don't see a problem, they should turn them to silent while at school, just like i do at work during a meeting

dumb logic.

My great grandparents lived without airplanes or microwaves, yet each one of these inventions makes life easier.

Same with a cell phone.

Please explain how a cell phone is used to make Shakespeare easier. There is no direct link between cell phones and school.

Yes there is. If parents need to get ahold of their kids, then they don't need to interrupt class. I don't know why you all think high school is some mega-important thing that a kid can't take 5 minutes from if his mom wants him to pick something up on the way home (example).

Just put it on vibrate, that is all.

The high school has always had a policy where you could have them, but they had to be turned off during the day. They were meant to help coordinate parents and children with the after-school activities and avoid having to worry about proper change or calling collect on a pay phone (if said phone is even working, etc.)

Back when I was in college, I had my phone ring once while in class. Oddly enough, I always kept my phone on vibrate (still do), so it was a bit awkward even for me! Worst part was... my mom had called and she knew I had class then :|. At least it wasn't one of those obnoxious ring tones and more of a standard telephone noise .

Reread the quote and my reply. I'm not at all trying to compare how a cell phone should be used in school. My retort to his post compared how technology makes life better, not how it pertains to school and why we should not blindly abandon technology because someone lived without it.

That being said, as a student, I would love to have had a cell phone in school. I would have kept it in my locker on vibrate and checked it once or twice a day to see if my folks needed to get ahold of me without bothering the office and paging me out of class.

As a teacher however, I think I would hate it. Thats why you set clear rules at the beginning of school and when one breaks those rules, they get punished.

I had an astronomy teacher in college that had a simple rule. If it rang, you had to let him answer it. If you didn't you were dropped from the class. After the first three or so phones rang NO ONE else dared have one ring. He cussed one girls mother out, it was great. Vibrate FTW!

hah. the principal is a dumbass. when irate parents start to sue the schools for not allowing them to get cellphones it's not going to be worth it. this has been tried before and the parents have won. keeping it for the day is fine however beyond that is just asking for a lawsuit of some kind. If a kid has to walk home from school because she doesn't have a phone and slips on ice which is common around here their would be hell to pay.

If I wasn't it college I would almost transfer there just to get them to try an take my phone away. Taking it from someone for the class period is one thing, and no judge would ever a give a half of a crap. But beyond the school day it is rather clearly theft. I never had a single problem with my phone throughout high school and on the rare occasion someones phone did ring, most teachers were cool about it and would just pretend to give them a hard time. Hell, almost every teacher I've had, had their phone go off at least once.

If I was the principal I would take the cell phone and my favorite sledge hammer and destroy it in front of the student. Cell phones have ABSOLUTELY no business being in a class room.

I don't think the phone should be taken away, but if I was teaching they would lose points every time it rang. If you end up failing because you can't be bothered to show respect for the class then that's your problem isn't it. I had teachers in High School who would deduct 10 points per minute you were asleep if you fell asleep. I don't see why they couldn't do something similar for cell phones.

Also, if some students didn't spend 80% of their time texting each other instead of learning and then interupting the class every other day when the phone rings I don't think people would resort to taking the phone.

In my school it was against policy to have any food or drink in the classrooms so if they saw you with something they took it and threw it away. Was that theft? No, the student new the rule and decided to disobey it.

I see that those rules helped you tremendously.

During my senior year of high school, I was on staff at the school I attended, so I carried my cell phone all the time, so that my boss or the school administration could easily call me to have me do something. Their opinion was that classes are important, but it's more important to get the network back online if something happens (was during a period of construction and many network problems). They only called me a few times throughout that year.

I know that the school's policy was that you could not have cell phones in school, but after they took away some kid's cell phone, his attorney convinced the school (and their legal counsel) that they ought not take the cell phone away for more than the remainder of the current day. I think that the policy still stands, but now students just get sent to the Director's office to explain themselves if they are caught talking on it, or it interrupts class.

Big deal. Cell phones were banned the entire time I was in HS and I brought one to school everyday. I just left it on vibrate.

I know a prof who takes points off of everyone's grade every time a cell phone goes off during class.

Hahaha... I did this once. We found out our teacher's cell number and called it during class. It was funny the first two times.. .but then he found out who it was. He wasn't a bit happy at all.

High school sucks for intelligent well behaved individuals because the have to lock it down for the lowest common denominator mouth breathing fvckwits. I always hated that.

I didn't have a cell phone in high school, but my brother has one now. He has the ringer and the vibrate off, but the phone has these orange lights that pulse when it rings. Usually though, he keeps his phone off.

I keep my phone on vibrate at all times. If it rings in class and I wasn't expecting a call, I let it ring. I figure if it's important enough, they'll leave a message.

I don't have any problems with cell phones. Heck I got ride of my land line three years ago and function only with one. Maybe you can explain to me how students having cell phones in school make life better. My generation survived just fine without them.

I know where that is lol. I don't think they can legally do that though. It is disrespectful though.

Why not? My mom is a teacher and has a drawer full of cool stuff she confiscates from kids. If they remember to ask she will give it back at the end of the year. You are at school to learn, nothing else.

If those kids knew their rights your mom wouldn't be touching the items, much less keeping them. Teachers don't have the power to seize any object from any student, technically.

Then again, I suppose it's a true tribute to how great American schools are that students don't know their rights, nor do they know much at all unfortunately.

I felt like a second class citizen as a high school, subject to the rule of a bunch of morons who couldn't cut it in a real college program so they fall back on teaching.

I thought schools were just using cell phone jammers now, which I thought was a good idea. I would think that would be easier and more efficient.
