How many computers does one key allow?
Student and Teacher edition used to be 3, and Professional was 2 (1 desktop + 1 laptop). This was back in 2003 though.

iirc (i was only 10 in '97 ) office 97 sucked. 2000 was awesome, though. we were using that up til last year (laptop came preloaded with office 2003). 2000 and 2003 are great, by my experience, the latter just looks nicer. 2007 is TOTALLY different though (at least Word). i'm not sure if it's a good thing.

Wow... I got my copy of Office 07 and [previously] 2003 from my school for, well, free. If you ask me, any of you college kids that are having to pay for this software are getting ripped off.

also, does anyone know if there's a limit? or whether you can resell it? cause there's a few people i know that want Office 2007 but won't get it due to cost. i'm willing to get them a copy for $60 + tax...not for free though.

AFAIK it can't be resold since it's a student version. Which also means it comes w/o printed documentation and is not a boxed version.

Then only a minority is not getting ripped off. What are you majoring in? At my university there are different schools that have different deals with Microsoft. Some students have to pay the "full" price (which is still much less than the retail price) for their student version of Office, business majors pay only $10 for the Pro version... I would have to pay ~$65 for the Pro version. So, $60 for the Ultimate sounds like a great bargain to me.

My aunt upgraded her home business computer to a modern PC from an IBM AT just 3 years ago:Q

She's probably not playing the latest games on that rig is she?

download only? I'd prefer a CD too.

in the order process, a cd will be shipped for a nominal fee

I saw the comment about shipping a physical CD for a nominal fee, but I never saw anything after that.

I emailed them and asked about the DVD. Here is the reply I received:

"Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Student Hero online store.

Unfortunately, DVD is not available at this time.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please reply to this
e-mail."

Anyone figure out what the "Extended Download Service" for $5.95 is, at first I thought this was that nominal fee for the DVD/CD.... Also, is it confirmed this can be installed on more then 1 PC?

Thanks

Would a junior in high school be eligible? His school lets them have email address through the school server (though few use them). He has been asking for this as he is getting tired of constantly having to covert from the Office '97 that I gave him back in elementary school.

There is nothing shady about it -- it is an official microsoft promotion.

I'm interested in this thing about installing it on multiple computers

From "The Ultimate Steal" page:

"Can I only install this software on one computer?
As with any Microsoft® Office software you buy at retail, you are licensed one copy of the software for use on one device and are allowed to install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device."

Extended download allows you to download the purchased software from Digital River for up to a year after purchase (iirc it was a year) as opposed to the standard 30 days from date of purchase.

Microsoft or an appointed vendor may contact you to verify that you are a current student. If documentation is not provided indicating that you are a current student, you will be liable to reimburse Microsoft for the full retail cost of the software ($679)

The solution to that is to get a one-time credit card # from your card issuer, and put a limit of, say, $65 in the one-time card. Then they won't just be able to TAKE your money...

Wow, I bought Office 97 at school, and it was like $143. Frikkin $60??? Thank god for competition.

The only competition that is driving this deal is competition from pirated versions. You think MS is offering this deal to college students because they're afraid of OpenOffice?

It's perpetual licensing I believe, so you are licensed forever.
Although to qualify for this initial purchase you should be ready to provide proof of eligibility should they request it.
