Apparently the teacher had a pornographic website on his laptop, and forgot to take it off before turning on the over head projector. One student took a quick snap shot and then went to show her boyfriend then they were suspended for doing so. That is certainly a twist..

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Students saw a shocking sight, a pornographic picture, in a JC Harmon High School classroom and the students ended up getting in big trouble.

The pornography was reportedly on the teacher's laptop at JC Harmon, located off of Steele Road in Kansas City, KS. When he turned on the projector there it was, but that picture put in motion a chain of events that led to the suspension of at least two students and made their parents furious.

"When she came home from school she was crying her eyes out, unable to speak about what had happened," Laura Lester said. "It was very upsetting that this is happening when our kids are in school, when they are supposed to be learning."

"I believe my son got in trouble because the school was trying to hide something," Karen Winkel said.

It was first hour biology class for Lester's freshman daughter.

"The picture was a pornographic picture," Winkel said.

According to the girl, when her teacher turned on the overhead projector which runs off his computer, a pornographic snap shot for a website appeared. Stunned and extremely uncomfortable Lester said her daughter took a picture. It shows the laptop and projector and, in the background, there's an image of a naked woman in a compromising position from behind.

"I know my daughter was very uncomfortable," Lester said.

Lester said her daughter sent the picture to her boyfriend and asked what to do. Winkel's son then sent the picture to a friend.

It's believed the friend posted the picture to his private Facebook page. After being pulled out of class twice that day, both Winkel and Lester's children were suspended for two days.

"For inappropriate use of electronics. I have no idea (what that's supposed to mean). I tried to run it through my mind and understand. She was on her own cell phone," Lester said.

Both parents said they tried to talk to school administrators about appealing the decision. Their students are members of the honor roll who do not want a suspension on their permanent record.

"That's the most upsetting, that she's looking into colleges and looking at a bright future and this is going to follow her, what this teacher did," Lester said.

When the parents couldn't get answers at school they consulted an attorney, but under Kansas law they have no real recourse on reversing the suspension. They agreed to waive their children's privacy rights with the school, but still officials say they can't talk to KCTV5. School officials did say they would be willing to sit down with the parents again.

The teacher whose computer the porn was on has been employed with Kansas City, KS Public Schools since 2002. The district said it's their policy to place an employee on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Surfing porn on the clock, that takes some balls. How can people be so stupid?

I just find it interesting that they suspended the kids first. They are all honor roll kids, what they hell did they expect when something like that happens? Sure they are gonna show it to their friends. It sounded as if the girl was asking her boyfriend what to do, and he stupidly showed a male friend who posted it on his private facebook. I really think the schools need to stay out of kids personal lives anyway. Facebook is their personal space.
Besides it really wasn't the girls fault on this.

If they are honor roll kids, they sure do make them dumber than they used to.

It's believed the friend posted the picture to his private Facebook page.
When I was an honor roll student, at least I knew there is no such thing as a "private" Facebook page. If you're going to publicly shame your teacher/school, do it anonymously.

LOL this is true, but I have yet met a kid in this age range that understands this unless they are computer nerds or taking classes in computer science.

I almost get the smell of students screwing with a teacher they didn't like here, but could be wrong of course.

Don't see the students as having done anything wrong.

Ergo, they need to be restored to proper standing, as if nothing happened. Anyone who acted against them reprimanded, or if they stand by their obstinance, fired.

To avoid further incidents, district personnel need to be instructed on separating work from home. That the same computers should not be used for both. I suppose that could be an issue if they use school resources to avoid paying for their own home computers....

There actually can be a private facebook page. You can set who can see it to any select number of friends or just yourself. Of course the NSA is still going to see all of it though.

Students were suspended for a violation of school policy; use of cell phones in class.

Only because of the content is this a story.
However, if not for the content; they may not have broken the rules.

Here you go guys. Its not that hard to understand. Our local HS has a cell phone ban as do most, so taking a picture obviously breaks the rules. IMO, they should have made an exception. Zero tolerance is idiotic.

Teacher on the clock and in the class room surfing a pron website > A student violating a trivial "no cell phone use" in school policy.

This sounds like the district and teacher's union trying to turn the table on the student while closing ranks to protect one of their own.

how the hell did the teacher not know that there was a porn image on his desktop?

im having trouble with that one.

as far as the school, wow kid takes a picture of something and gets suspended.

did they put the pic on the teachers computer? gonna say no.

school today and that zero tolerance crap has got to go.

lucky they didn't have a knife in their bedroom cause for some reason im sure they'd be expelled for it.

Nope. Teacher is on administrative leave. There is not an either/or situation here. No greater than sign needed.

I'm trying to find a perspective where using your own cellphone makes everything all right but, it just makes my head hurt.

I think that if the students used the cell phone pictures in a more responsible way - "hey principal - here's a picture of what happened in class. I had my cell phone off, but was carrying it. I turned it on to take this picture so that there was evidence of what happened in class" - then, no penalty at all for the student.

Taking pictures in class, and then posting those pictures to social media?? I have absolutely no problem with the suspension (provided the teacher also was suspended from his teaching duties.)

There's "zero tolerance," but I don't think that's what this decision was. I think the "Hey Facebook and the rest of the world, hey Twitter, check this out!" exacerbated the issue of cell phone use.

Even if the porn popup was from the teacher using the computer, looking up biology-related shit is probably a lot "riskier" than, say, a math teacher looking up some math problems for class. Shit happens, especially when people don't know how to properly use their computers to avoid porn stuff popping up -- and if the school's IT department is incompetent (like a lot of public school IT).

Girl just happens to have her phone out ready to take a picture for the couple of seconds it takes for the teacher to turn off the projector? And the teacher had a porn popup in the active window and not in the background? Seems pretty suspicious to me. Even if the teacher was looking at porn, I doubt they're going to just leave some porn right at the forefront of their screen then turn on their projector to display it without checking.

Teachers are often required / encouraged to stand out in the hall while students enter, especially with a first hour class, easily could have been a situation where a student thought it would be funny to do, and the joke just bit this girl in the ass.

Need more information to really know what was going on. I don't buy this girl's story at face value. "Yea, I was sooooo uncomfortable with the picture that I just happened to be prepared to snap the picture and immediately send it to my boyfriend." Sorry, Lester, but your kid is not uncomfortable with the picture at all.

I have to disagree with the comments that say this is overacting to cell phones. While I don't like it most cases, cell phones are a HUGE distraction and problem in schools. If you haven't been in a teaching environment and understand what the kids do with them, you probably wouldn't understand.

To take that a step further, I don't know of a single cell phone that starts up quickly. I have to agree - it's incredibly odd that she had the cell phone ready to go (violating school policy) when this just happened to appear on the screen.

Agreed. Wouldn't be surprised if a few Students caused this to happen. Perhaps for shits and giggles or perhaps because they hate the Teacher.

Not a fan of phones in schools, but I'm of the mind that students should have the same levels of protections as teachers. If a teacher were suspended for documenting a policy violation and discussing it on Facebook, that would be concerted activity and a suspension/termination would constitute retaliatory action.
