In my eyes if you are religious you are automatically missing something the rest of us intelligent humans have.

I am atheist and I am very, very happy about religion. It pacifies the sheeple, keeps everyone in line with it's silly stories and suppresses critical thought. Exactly why it was created. I'll do all the thinking for them, no problem.

Huh, I know 'intelligent' people with a multiple BA/BS + masters degrees + PhDs and they are some of the dumbest people I know.

By what do you measure 'intelligence'?

I don't know a lot with PhDs, but I'll agree with you at the masters degree level. BUT, that really depends on the field. I don't know ANYONE who has a masters degree in mathematics or any of the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, etc.) who anyone would describe as dumb. They're generally among the smartest people.

Some of them are on school boards though.

Speaking of fail, your reading comprehension is pretty bad. It's especially bad if think you're the smartest person in your life. Either you're wrong and you're actually an idiot, or everyone around you is so dumb that you have no basis for comparison, which makes you a fool.

1) I don't surround myself with people at work. I'm forced to work with them.

2) I work with a ton of religious people who are, by all normal metrics, very intelligent. I'm also an intelligent person, so I'm not perceiving them to be much smarter from a position of ignorance. The average person I work with graduated at or near the top of their class and has at least a four year engineering degree - most of which have a masters or PhD. By any classification these people are intelligent, yet most believe in some flavor of deity. This ratio is consistent with my life experience living in the US. I've lived in every corner of the country.

Calling yourself the smartest person you know calls your intelligence into question, by the way. Most intelligent people realize there's always someone who is even smarter and probably not far away unless you live in a tiny town. Also, you seem to be correlating your position in life with intelligence whereas I was merely mentioning it being a requirement for working in a particular industry. Understanding the difference is important, but that tends to come with age and wisdom, so you're either young or extremely arrogant.
The fact that you can't pick up on such a blatently obvious troll post makes me question your intelligence immediately. I mean, he basically regurgitated the meat of your post verbatim.

Sort of an interesting foot note article. Takes a very complicated topic and largely dumbs it down to gifted or not gifted, religeous or not religeous. It doesn't seem to be answering anything important, and has the effect of further dividing people across those dimensions. In fact, neither axis has bearing on whether someone is a good person.

Well I guess we know which side you fall on. :awe):sneaky:

I think P&N is a forum down.

As to the assertion. Religion appeals to a lot of very poor and helpless people. Those in dire need. Of course their education and opportunities are less. Someone be hating on da poor.

I knew this woman who was really dumb. She wore a cross around her neck. It only got fifteen minutes of sunlight a day so I didn't mind the dumb.

I'm an athiest, I don't much care for religion (am OK with it existing as long as it stays out of my way).

But I don't know that I believe in 'intelligence' as some sort of intrinsic, inate, fixed and measurable quantity any more than I believe in God. I don't like the intellectual snobbery of a certain kind of athiest and I don't think people are religious becuase they are 'stupid'.

For the most part people are religious because they find it useful to be religious, because it helps them in some way. Just as people believe in IQ because it benefits them in some way to do so.

None of this matters. All that matters is what is true, and no religion is true (except mine, but that's beside the point).

I choose to believe the Bible in which Jesus points out the falsity of the 'wisdom of the world' so I take this as a compliment. I'd much rather have my life in sync with my creator and his will for my life than to score well on an IQ test.

Is this a long winded way to say "ignorance is bliss"?

Lies, we can't even agree that cheesecake is obviously a pie.

Actually, and I am sure, totally by accident, you have picked a great example.

People see "cake" in the name but visually, cheesecake looks more like a pie. Either conclusion is based on superficial information. Most people discussing this subject don't even have a good understanding of what makes something a pie or cake from a technical standpoint.

Of course, the truth is, a cheesecake is most likely correctly classified as a torte or custard but when the definitions are vague and not universally agreed upon, classification is problematic and rather pointless.

Now, what I just said explains why this study is worthless. The funny thing is, I am guessing the "smart" people won't get it but the "dumb" ones will.

If that is too much for you, lets go with this... a person that doesn't believe in religion did the rather stupid thing of posting this is the wrong forum. Had this study come to the opposite conclusion, I have no doubt a religious person would have posted it, only in the correct forum.

Are you conducting a textual analysis of cheesecake? If so, I'm proud to be a member of ATOT on this day.

Let me make an observation: Black people are more religious.

Now what do you think of the study?
