We received and fully vetted the following request to ask for volunteers for a research study from a Doctorate student at the University of Nottingham:

I have received ethical approval from the University of Nottingham ethics board. Participants need to have played Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 as the choice concerns their actions in the campaign “No Russian”.

Here is her formal request:

Gamers!
I am recruiting participants to take part in a research study I am conducting as part of my Doctorate in Forensic Psychology. The study is looking at the differences in motivations, personality differences, and behavioural outcomes based on choices made in video games. Participants need to have played Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. If you would like further details or to take part in the study, follow the link below:

Link redacted as study is finished.

The questionnaire should take no more than 20 minutes to complete

Please be aware, in order to prevent “thread bumping” I will not be replying to anything else posted on this thread. If you wish to contact me to discuss the study, please use the contact details provided from the study page.

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at this post.

It's 20 minutes, it's SCIENCE, you know you want to. So stand and deliver!

I filled it out. Lots of those "Strongly Agree/Disagree" questions, and maybe 10 questions about MW2.

I should say that while I did fire my weapon inside the airport during that mission, I didn't actually shoot anybody. I also went and played it both the other ways, shooting people and not shooting at all, and it changed nothing in the story line.

I didn't play a lot of MW2, but I did play the first half of the campaign or so, and I certainly remember the Russian terrorist mission (as well as the surrounding controversy). When you start a new save, the game gives you a dialog that says something to the extent of "Some players may find one of the missions disturbing or offensive. Would you like a warning beforehand?" And I was like, absolutely, I wouldn't want to miss it.

I actually repeated that level a handful of times. I was disappointed in how the game wouldn't allow you to run, and how the NPCs shooting alongside you would sometimes briefly sprint ahead of you to wipe out crowds of people before you had a chance to get to them. I would try to find the optimal paths for walking through the map so I could kill as many people as possible. I guess I'm a terrible person.

It's a game, when they cost £45 new I make every shot count. Just did the survey and I felt no shame telling them , I shot everyone even the other guys. Lol
But saying it was gamers choice, they took out the torture scene from splinter cell blacklist. The one you stab the terrorist to get info and the bomb codes on a flash drive. But they let a nutter skull fuck a stuffed toy in GTA V. What's next rubber bullets in COD.

Done and Done...

Now waiting on the results to say First Person shooters build positive character rather negative character!

Maybe the mobile version is a bit glitchy but the only answers it gave me to choose from were yes or no. If those were the only choices given, I hope the results won't be used for anything like a dissertation.

barely into it and it's already slanted, imo.

What influenced your choice to either play or skip "No Russian"?
9. The games storyline

Yes
No

10. Did this make you want to play it more or less?

More
Less

How about neither? It was part of a game I am playing. I wanted to experience all of a game that I paid for. i got no sick or twisted or sexual enjoyment out of it. it was a level in a game.

question 19 is stupid also. it's the same stuff over and over again, just worded differently, and those questions are really slanted too.

just completed it and based on several question, seems like they are wanting it to show people who play violent video games are violent people. Also, why are they only focusing on 1 video game? horrible survey.

Is it really a “moral choice” at all though? Choosing whether or not to shoot people in real life is a moral choice but pointing your mouse at pixels on a screen . . . is just pixels on a screen. There is, obviously, no loss of human life, no blood, no guts, no ruining families’ Christmas.

Being able to virtually experience what it is like to do this with absolutely no consequences whatsoever, is absolutely fantastic – literally. Ever do something in a dream that you would never do in real life? Me and 7 billion other people too! I thought that level was great fun, and I killed as many pixels, I mean people, as I could. My only regret is that some of them got away (there were too many targets!). Because you can’t do it in real life.

So judging by my choices... a guy who understands what it is like to be in someone's shoes.
A person with great emotional understanding and variance.
A guy who will put his fists up if it needs to come to that and will defend himself if attacked.
A guy who feels sorry for the less fortunate.
A guy who knows what to do in emergencies, and does not really falter no matter how bad it is.

Yet i killed everyone in that mission and felt nothing... it's a frigging game FFS...

None of the initial questions show up on my iPad. Hope her doctorate isn't in IT.
