obesity is a real problem but we need to find a more constructive solution to the problem than levying some form of a 'fat tax'.

Some people really cannot help their weight problem... they can fight it and keep their weight from ballooning but they will always be over weight.

But most people can do something about it or could've when they were younger. The older and heavier you become, the harder it is to get back in shape.

I say this all as a potential fat person. I'd easily gain 40-50 lbs in two years or so if I let myself go... 1.5 years ago I was 25 lbs heavier/fatter than I am now.

I got disgusted with myself and just whipped myself back into shape.

I don't buy it. I'm 42, max at 211 in 2003. I'm now 185, but I've been down to 169. I lift weights, but I don't do cardio (I should do HIIT or MO at least, but I don't).

It's all about boosting the metabolism through eating properly (clean and enough calories that you're not starving the body) and metabolically boosting exercises, namely, HIIT and/or free weights.

I need to get myself back at it again and start burning off some bf.

There are some very good nutritional and fat loss experts out there, but it does require knowing who to listen to. I'd say: Alan Aragon for nutrition and Alwyn Cosgrove for fat loss.

Better get used to it. I was out shopping today and I swear EVERYONE is overweight in this country. OK, not everyone, but like 60% of the people I saw were overweight and I'm not remotely in a region that earns a spot on the 'most fattest' rankings.

I'm not talking about people with a little extra padding. FAT!

Obsessive behavior manifests itself in any number of ways. Some will eat excessively, other may exercise excessively.

Many posters in this thread allude that they exercise "for the greater good". That because of their idiosyncrasies, they deserve more in the form of lower expenses. Nonsense. You do what you do because your self-image is all-important. Or being "healthy" is of prime concern. You're not happy with what you have, you need more. Hmmm.......

The interesting thing about those that obsessively exercise is that many of them also eat excessively. They have to so they can maintain their weight. Some real interesting psychology going on there.

I'm as far from religious as you could get, but I do believe in some if not most of organized religions principles. The paraphrased quote that has run through my mind since the beginning of this thread is "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

You love to exercise and be thin. OK, that's fine. You hate overweight people too, well evidently you're not alone. You think you deserve some "special treatment" because of your obsessions? Maybe so. Will it be in the form you desire - monetary? Never going to happen.

Quit worrying about everyone else and go take a look in the mirror. Hopefully you like what you see. When I look at you, I just see another bigot.

It's not psychological at all. It's physiological. You burn more, you naturally eat more. If you want to put on muscle mass, cals in > cals out, protein should be around 1g/lb bw, carbs should be about 2/3 bw in grams. If you want to lose body fat, cals in < cals out, but only about 20% less. It's science, not psych.

However, you can simplify it down to eating clean, since it's more filling and has a higher thermic effect.

I have an Idea, insurance companies take 1$ for every pound someone is overweight over 10lbs overweight, take all of that money, and equally divide it amongst Non-Smoking people that are less than 10lbs overweight. I read the whole thread, good stuff. Fat people should have to have higher insurance so should smokers, life insurance should be higher also because they will likely DIE prematurely because of their habits.
