duct tape, sandals for the shower, headphones, condoms, no-doz if you're not a coffee drinker, cash for laundry/snacks.

a work ethic (procrastication is bad)

i'm doing engineering, no room for procrastination
a good pocket sized digicam would be like what?
how are messenger bags as backpacks cuz i have to carry a laptop.

You're going to want something you can carry on your back. You WILL have heavy engineering books. Oh yeah, and get a TI-89. And maybe a bike.

Besides that, what he recommended was pretty good. Don't listen to those other guys, they probably went to community colleges

I kid, I kid...

If I place it in a corner, it shouldn't take up too much room.

Funnel and a garden hose. And some duct tape.

don't forget your 800 cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon

You can ditch the frame to the dorm supplied bed and simply lay the matress across the top of the cases.

don't get that crap, unless you have an ultra light and won't be carrying books. I got a dell backpack for my laptop and its perfect, I can bike to class and not have to worry about the weight of the thing.

Trust me even if you are doing engineering you will have plenty of time to procastinate espically since it will be your first year and you will just have the basic classes which are easy as heck. Definitely buy some good headphones as your roommate and hall/suitemates will thank you for it. Another good thing is possibily an X-box or something (having NCAA hall tournaments was popular last year). And yea LOTS of quaters. You'll find out the best time to do laundry is usually in the early morning on weekends or late at night on weekdays. And if you don't have any connections to people 21 or over, make them asap. Or find a few friends with those connections. And just to reinforce what others have said, take some flip-flops for the shower you'll be glad you did. BTW, what college will you be going to?

EDIT: Do you know for sure wether you have to carry a laptop? I've found them to be more of a hassle than anything else while taking to class and just another way to not pay attention (IM and crap like that).

I've got my Xbox

I'd rather carry it, seems more convenient.

I'm going to UC Berkeley.

One of my best friends is going to be going to Berkeley as a freshman next year as well. Definitely a cool school that's close to me(Fresno) but unfortunetly I did not make the cut.

A screwdriver set, extra phone cord so you don't have to stick it right next to the jack, 9v battery for backup for alarm, of course shower sandles, lots of stuff to throw up on your wall so it doesn't look like you lack personality, something like a cool pillow to draw girls to your bed (down comforters work wonders), and a lighter.

Don't have to bother with condoms, they're free. Don't have to bother with a beer pong table, use the screwdrivers to rip down a closet door.

edit: oh yeah, and LOTS of double sided and duct tape

There is ALWAYS room for procrastination, i'm in engineering too.
a pocket sized cam is a pocket sized cam.
its better if you get a bag that has a laptop sleeve or something protective.

I'm not giving up my 19" CRT for a friggin LCD anytime soon... money is the main thing but I like CRT better anyhow. I'll just have to MAKE room, heh.

I think at my school I can't bring any furniture, so I guess it's a crappy wooden computer chair for me =(
