I remember loving Clik (basically same as Spam) sandwiches as a kid. Bought some a while back out of nostalgia, and couldn't stomac it. I guess our taste really does change as we grow up. But as a kid I also didn't know how the sausage was made, so to speak. When that stuff comes out of the can it's freaking nasty lol. As a kid I didn't see that part.

Kraft Dinner is kinda the same idea, used to love it as a kid, and now it's meh. it's edible but not more than that. I think the recipe changed since I was a kid though.

so is cracking an egg while rice is boiling in rice cooker and adding soy sauce to the dish before serving.

college: fast, cheap, delicious
Japanese people crack an egg on a bowl of piping hot rice with soy sauce and mix it. Taiwanese (probably got it from Japan) do it with salt instead of soy sauce.

Hawaii residents eat more Spam per year than any other state - 7 million cans per year. Apparently it was served to GIs during WWII and it became a thing.
I remember when I heard about Spam as a kid and asked my mom about it, she'd never had it either, as it was banned from their house since my grandfather had eaten too much of it while he was in the Navy.

My mom served fried spam every Sunday for years. I have elected to not buy the stuff since leaving home. It tasted worse than other canned hams yet costs more.

My friends asked me to make spam fried rice for our draft on Sunday. I tend to go a few months without it then I get a crazy craving and have to have it.

Spam has a better consistency, at least compared to the discount canned ham I bought a year or two ago. I love spam. I don't eat it a whole lot, but I always have a couple cans in the cupboard.

This really should go in the Quanta Mag thread but it's from New Scientist.

https://www.newscientist.com/articl...remember-the-search-for-gravitational-memory/ - prob behind paywall just fyi

It seems that strong gravitational waves, like when black holes merge, leave a mark on space-time that can later effect things even in the absence of any "local" gravity. I guess you could think of it as a sort gravitational ghost, but one that CAN fuck with you. It's some pretty bizarre shit.

Now it gets weird. The equations that describe colliding black holes just happen to also describe what are called "soft particles." I'm pretty sure the actual particles haven't been identified but their defining characteristic is that they have zero energy.

These guys form on the surface of a bh if the new bh is heavy enough to dent space-time.

The point? Well, it mostly relates to painting the "envelope" that any theory of quantum gravity must observe.

edit - it's a very mind bending article especially since we're about 3 levels of abstraction above the actual theories, so they don't really make a lot of sense.

Collateral Estoppel - is a broader application of the principle of res judicata

rj is pretty simple - an event occurs that contains say 10 chargeable offenses. As prosecutor, you decide to only charge 7. Why, who tf knows. You loose. Now you want a second bite of the apple and try to indict on the other 3. Pound sand dipshit. You had your chance and you only get one.

It's limited to issues of law not facts though.

collateral estoppel applies to both apparently, which is headscratcher, but common law, especially differences between law and equity (basically justice) tends not to be pretty.

So same idea, but let's say you pistol whipped some old lady as you were leaving the bank. It's not directly related to bank heist but does arise out of the same set of events. Well, you need to include that charge with the other 7 or you're forever barred.

Here's a much better but longish explanation https://www.bonalaw.com/insights/le...ments-of-collateral-estoppel-issue-preclusion

RJ and CE are sorta the same idea, but applied in different situations.

Saudi Arabia is going to build a sideways skyscraper that costs ~$1 Trillion:

It's 75miles long and will house 5M people.
It will also have miles of greenery and homes and its own farms to feed the more than five million residents expected to fill it out.

with the expected High speed rail, you can go end to end in about 20 min

Discount tinned meat is never a good choice!

I ate spam regularly when I was a kid. Spam fritters mainly.
Cooked them recently as a nostalgia thing with my kids and we were all 🤢
They have either changed the recipe since I was a kid or I didn't have functional taste buds then. It pretty much just tastes of salt.

What are some mind-blowing facts that sound unreal but are actually true?
1. People don’t have as strong intuitive sense of how much bigger 1 billion is than 1 million.
  • A million seconds is about 11 days.
  • A billion seconds is about 32 years.
2. Only 2% of people can hear their eyes move and blink.

3. The Facebook logo is blue because founder Mark Zuckerberg is red-green color blind, making blue the “richest color ” for him.

4. If you hold in your farts long enough, the gas can be re-absorbed and come out of your mouth.

5. Over 50% of pilots have admitted to falling asleep mid-flight. And of these pilots, 29% said that they had woken up to find their co-pilot asleep as well.

6. Most toilet paper sold for home use in France is pink.

7. There are more fake flamingos in the world than real flamingos.

8. Bananas are berries, but strawberries are not.

9. Giraffes and humans have the same number of necklines. Actually, all mammals do.

10. Sometimes, hiding your thumb behind all your fingers is a sign of panic.

11. Broccoli is a man-made vegetable and was created by breeding different types of cabbages.

12. Try to breathe and swallow at the same time. You can’t

Today is International Red Panda Day, created to spread awareness about them being near extinction.

I suppose I like Red Pandas as much as the next guy. This is a good reason but it seems like almost every day of the year is something special. I mean there's a pizza day and a cheesesteak day now as well lol.

Does that mean we should be eating red pandas today?
