Stumped....

I've been running my small LAN using mostly my main rig through a Speedstream 2624 wireless router - cable from main rig to router. Suddenly my rig won't connect with the router. At all. Running W2K with all service packs.

What I've done:

Pinged localhost: ok
Pinged the router: no go
uninstalled the network adapter and reinstalled it: no go
switched cables and ports on the router: no go
enabled and disabled the network: no go
shut off Zone Alarm: no help
shifted the network card to a different PCI slot: no go

Weird happenings:

no network icon in tray even though it's supposed to be there

although the light on the network card shows green there are no received packets

I've been running SETI and the rig spawns duplicate SETI processes that show no CPU share. After I've ended the process on a bunch of them over about a 15 minute period they stop spawning

All other rigs on the network can access the net

I am completely stumped about what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks....

Are you using DHCP or static addresses? If static, did you enter them correctly ? Please check.

All the rigs use DHCP.

Also, prior to this, for the last week the rig has been spontaneously rebooting and scandisk has reported lost chains and truncated entries. I cleaned out a lot of dust from the inside.

Just got home to get this.

ipconfig /all yields the following:

Host Name : stilson
Primary DNS suffix :
Node type : Broadcast
IP Routing enabled : No
WINS proxy enabled : No

Ethernet adapter local .....:
Connection specific DNS Suffix :
Description :Kingston Eherx PCI 10/100 blah blah
Physical address : 00-C0-F0-8B-44-82
DHCP enabled : Yes
Autoconfiguration enabled : Yes
IP Address : 0.0.0.0
Subnet mask : 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway :
DHCP Server :
DNS Server :

That's all she wrote. I tried to renew the connection again and got the same error message:
"The following error occurredd when renewing adapter Local Area Connection 3: An internal error occurred. Disconnect and reconnect the network intreface or reboot the machine."

I have disconnected, reconnedted, and rebooted over a dozen times so far. Also, there are no other Local Area Connections in the profile, the number 3, I believe, came about when I moved the card to different PCI slots.

Is there any hope here?

Lifer: yes, I've done that. Besides, the router works for the other two rigs, in fact I'm writing this on an old Celeron 400 attached to that router.

Does anyone know what that "internal error" is that I got when I 'renewed' the connections through ipconfig? Could this be hardware based on the mobo (Iwill KK266-R)?

I tried swapping out the network card for one that I knew worked (having just posted here through it) but got the same 'internal error.'

Do I have to get a new mobo??

Sorry, Werk, early morning is not my best time. Yes, I have tried different ports, different cables, a different network card, plugging the cable modem directly into the rig instead of running it through the router; I've released, renewed, enabled, disabled, ipconfig'd, double and triple checked settings, and rebooted 'til my eyes have almost dropped out.

There's still no indication of what that "internal error" is, that I get when I try to renew the connection. I'm starting to think it's a mobo fault since all the other hardware and software solutions have come up wanting. If there are other theories I would be more than happy to hear them. Thanks.

Right after you release, renew, go the the event viewer and see if there is an entry for the error.
If there is report back. Most likley there is a lost or screwed up file.
If you can get your hands on a USB NIC try it. That will rule out the mainboard being a problem if it doesnt works.
If there are files required for the "network" that are damaged no mater what you NIC you install it will not work.
Run SFC /SCANNOW

You will need the 2k CD. If you have SP3 or less you will have to reply the hotfixes after running SFC.

Have you tried removing your network protocols and re-installing them?

It also sounds like your hdd is starting to head south, in which case a wipe and reload may be in order, plus maybe a new hdd

two things can be happening: either you need to reinstall all of your network protocols or your network card has gone (has happened to me multiple times with cheapo cards). So i first removing and reinstalling your network protocols first. if still u get no ip address then ask a friend for a network card and try his out. if it works, then u might need to buy a new one after a little more investigation. good luck.

Thanks all you guys, I'm back up. I tried new nics, cables etc., but it was deleting and reinstalling all the protocols that finally did it. Many, many bows of thanks....
