So my sons 32” LCD TV that is less than 5 years old has leaky caps. I thought this Cap mess was fixed when all the motherboards had these issues.
So I need to solder 6 1000uf/16v, 1 1500uf/16v, and 4 470uf/35v to fix it. Not all are leaking but why half azz it.

So where do others buy their caps? I know they have to be Low ESR but anything else to look out for?

fruitcake, that sounds like alot of hassle for a 32" TV. I've never had success in desoldering and resoldering boards

fun to try though

mouser, newark, digikey.

Even not fail caps have a life time, they don't last forever. especially at high temperatures, or high ripple, etc.

Rarly use this TV and its less than 5 years old. I have a LCD tv that is 8-9 years old and its still going and get much more usage.

That and its not just 1 but at least 3 of them that are bad.

http://www.badcaps.net supplies both parts and advice.

Choose brands like Nichicon, United Chemicon, Nippon Chemicon, Panasonic, and Rubycon, available from Badcaps.net, Digikey, and Mouser.

Do not try to improve lifespan by substituting solid polymer capacitors for conventional electrolytics since polymers are not made for low frequency operation and have such low impedance or ESR that they may cause inductive filters to oscillate badly. Even conventional electrolytics should approximately match the impedance or ESR ratings of the original capacitors when they were new.

These guys are pretty good to deal with.

Seems like they are going back to using cheap ass CAPs just so they last up until the warranty expires. They know most people will just throw it away and buy something new, not attempt to fix the crap CAPs.

Samsung 204B monitors (and others) used a ton of Chinese crap CAPs that would fail in a couple of years.

That's why it's a good idea to do a cruise around the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon to see if any LCD's are out for trash pickup, if it's a bad cap issue, fix,=profit!. Lot's of competition though, metal scrappers in old trucks are always roaming around, they'll take the LCD just for the copper in the dang power cord!..

But there's a lot of 80's and 90's stuff out there still. High-end stereo stuff comes most readily to mind. But a lot of 90's tube TV's (of then-mediocre quality, at best) still kicking, too. Even if you're not talking about Nakamichi or McIntosh or something...I've still got and have sold (closer to given away) JVC and Sony stuff that's over 15 years old.

His TV is probably part of the 'terrible caps' phenomenom that lasted until...'07 or so, I think? Cheap Radioshack replacements are still a step up.

I've got a Sharp "32 CRT that I use in the bedroom, 11 years old, still works perfectly, I have no intention to chuck it even though I know it's a power hog, I dread the thought of moving it as it weighs 120lbs!...

My mother-in-law's Samsung crapped out about 6 mos so we replaced the caps and it was working. This weekend, the tv just stopped turning on again. I'm assuming it's the caps but haven't had time to take it apart again. The 1st time it crapped out, I'd never soldered before so I made her do it so I wouldn't feel bad if I screwed it up. This time, I'll be doing the soldering so I can learn how.

try looking on ebay; I was looking for caps for the infamous soyo topaz s model and found a kit of all the caps. It was pretty cheap (though it didn't fix it). Maybe you can find a similar kit (if you are 100% sure the caps are the issue).

Hmm, I have a Samsung TV.... think it might be going on 3ish years now. I'll have to cross my fingers, and meanwhile, be sure to keep all the capacitors I find in old stuff and hope if I do end up having to replace some that I have matching ones.

Since the replacement caps are fairly new you might want to look at other power supply components, diodes, rectifiers, regulators, ect.

My samsung's caps failed at just about the three year mark. :|

I've been involved in a couple class action lawsuits for this. My family has had 4 out of 5 Samsung flat screen TVs that we have bought die right around the time the warranty expired. 3 of them were these capacitors, and 1 of them had a cooling flaw where the screen eventually showed defects.

For that last one, Samsung recommended that we attach computer fans to the TV, which I thought was hilarious. I bought a 2u rack mount fan set with a thermostat to resolve it.

The TV's have great image quality, but the build quality on them are shit. I will never buy another Samsung TV.

Doc: [smugly] Ah, see. Here's the problem. This part is made in Japan.
Marty: What are you talking about, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan!
Doc: [bewildered] Great Scott!

Son of a bitch... My Dell 2407 has been running strong for 5 years and I almost want it to die so I can upgrade.

I think I'm at the 3.5 year mark with my Samsung. Sigh. If it dies, I have no interest in performing my own maintenance/fixing, so I'd probably pawn it on Craigslist as-is. The pisser is not knowing what to replace it with. I miss the days where a good brand meant something.

How do we find out the impedance rating on caps?, all I see are the microfarad and voltage rating printed on the caps.

There is no impedance rating on electrolytic capacitors, You want to match the farad rating and either match or exceed the voltage ratings. Also, polarity is very important when re installing the cap as mentioned in the other capacitor thread.
