Yeah, I'm having issues with financial aid too, because my parents make enough money to help me with college, but do not help with basically any of my tuition. So I get a tiny amount of federal aid and am forced to use private loans for the rest. sucksssss

luckily financial aid actually helps a kid try to better themselves....whereas welfare and shit, people just leach off of it, and live below the poverty line for free.

The fed is not interested in being "fair" - they just want to make the rich poorer and the poor richer.

I do not qualify for any need-based scholarships because my parents make too much money (both pharmacists) and have saved and invested a lot of money. I go to a state university and am fortunate that all my tuition is covered (with enough for rent and food) by merit scholarships.

So I have no room to complain, but this one thing frustrates me.. my best friend from high school goes to a private school that is about $44,000 a year and all but $5,000 is covered by a need-based grant, and the remainder is covered by his parents. Just...frustrating.

"all but $5,000"? Dam dude, that is nothing to be frustrated about. I swear, today, people want everything for free. If he really wants that $5k covered, tell him to work his but off and find a scholarship. They are crap loads out there that go unclaimed.

You could look into a job that has tuition reimbursement, that's how I was able to get my degree.

I think you misunderstand. I go to a state school that costs about $9400 a year, and that and living expenses are covered solely by merit-based scholarships because I worked really hard in high school.

Whereas my friend goes to a school costing $44,000 and nearly all is covered by need-based scholarships. I also didn't mean to insinuate that he wants the remainder paid for.

So I had to work really hard to get the costs of a state university covered, whereas my friend didn't have to do anything special and gets the costs of a private university covered. All because my parents are in a well-paying profession and made investments (or conversely, his aren't/didn't). Just saying it seems a little wrong.

That is not federal aid right? I read that private schools (especially the upper-tier ones) tend to be pretty generous with financial aid. A lot of people go to public schools and don't even consider the privates cost differences. In some cases though, the private school aid can offset the higher tuition, so people should look at all the options.

(I'm basing this off what I remember reading a few months ago, I might be remembering this completely wrong )

Yeah this one sounds familiar, I think the figure was around 40% for us. FAFSA was kind enough to halve my aid and pull the rug out from underneath me, while I was unable to find work for 1/2 of the summer. :/

On the bright side I've now enlisted and currently await knowing what my ship date is.

When I went to college I was able to pay for it. Go a few years down the line when the economy crashed, bubble burst, and my degree was basically worthless. Now I needed to go back and get reeducated in a different field but didn't have the financial resources to pay for so I applied for financial aid but was told no dice because I already had a degree. So when I did qualify but didn't use it was OK but when I needed it I couldn't get it. It sucks.

I don't have a degree and still don't get anything. Sucks more.

That's how nearly all private schools work. Bring your tuition down to a level you'd pay at a comparable public university.

Plus I'm reading that you got ALL your costs covered. Good job. Your friend (or his parents) still have to pay money that you don't have to.

Can I bitch at you for probably going to a high school that overinflated their grades and taught tests to get more state funding causing you to get your merit scholarship? No, so I won't. I'll just read what I wrote in my post above.
