Stupid gun question

How do they designate the bullets w/ numbers and calibers? Like 9mm, are those 9mm in... diameter? radius? And is that .09 caliber? I always wondered but never asked

9mm is the diameter. calibers like .45 are in inches.

It's diameter of the bullet in mm or inches (calibur)

IE .357 = .357 of an inch diameter.

mm is usually measured between groove to groove and caliber between land to land
Land to land constitutes bore diameter

MacBaine answered this. I think this is another arena where you get the US measurements vs the world contest showing again, ie US vs Metric. I find it even stranger that we measure our tanks and artillary cannons in mm (like 120mm Abrams and 155mm self-propelled) but the point-defense guns on those same tanks are measured in inches (.50 cal).

Maybe since mm are smaller we can use a larger number for that same size and that makes is seem more intimidating.

EDIT* I guess this is not always the case as we refer to our small deck canons on destroyers and the like as the '5-inch' gun

The .30-06 is 30 caliber, introduced in nineteen-ought-six...so that might be it

The .30-30 is also 30 caliber and I believe it was originally designed to be loaded with 30 grains of black powder

So uh...hope that narrows it down somewhat
