So I was sitting in class today, listening to my teacher drone on. He asked if any of us knew what this old plastic thing was. I'd never seen one before, and apparently nobody else in class had either, judging from their silence.

Then I notice the guy repairing the ductwork for the heating system smirking and shaking his head at us. It's like he thinks his knowledge of obsolete technology makes him superior. Hey buddy, guess what knowing what a 'cassette tape' is got you? A job fixing the furnace in my 21 y/o brother's McMansion.

The joke is on you. I have a good friend who has an HVAC business. When he charges you $2500 to install a new condenser (outside unit) he has paid about $1000 for the part and it takes less than 2 hours to install. You do the math. How much are you paying to go to school to get a $20 an hour job if you are lucky? Who is the dumbass now??

It's more like his knowledge about the technology that keeps you comfortable (and in some areas, from dying) and then raping you on the labor makes him superior.

My brother works for an HVAC business and makes about $12/hr. So.. there's that.

Working for is the difference. My buddy owns the business and the profit margins are simply huge. If you deal with a local small business you are likely getting the owner at your house to do the repair or at least oversee it....and he is making bank.

A HVAC tech in his state makes on average 44K a year. Pretty good money. Depending on their job, they make more, in a couple of cases quite a bit more.
