I wouldn't take the cash, you never know what the repair shop might find and have to add to the cost.

Next day, the idiots texted me about settling it outside of insurance. I've had it with their attitude, and told them about their lying, then she called me and started to do that ghetto 'latina-chick-talking-non-stop-over-you' thing.

WTF is wrong with you? If they want to take care of it out of pocket, what's your problem?

At least they stuck around and didn't run...This happened to me in 2012:
That was a rental car I had while my other car was being repaired after yet another rear-end collision. I was on my way to turn it back into the rental company when BANG! and the guy took off. (the CHP finally caught up to him thanks to a lady who took pics (and got his license plate) with her phone.

I read about it in Adam Carolla's book, but had to look it up..Los Angeles is nuts!
50 percent of all incidents in Los Angeles County are hit-and-run cases.

yup, and when the bills went to Gov Brown to toughen up hit and run violations, he said NOPE.

http://la.streetsblog.org/2014/09/3...y-laws-including-hit-and-run-vulnerable-user/

but hey, at least he signed into law the bill creating an "amber alert" type system for hit and runs I guess. And we have billboards now!! I mean LOOK AT THESE - Tthey're so goddamn effective I don't understand why they're not on every corner.

Why didn't the teenage girl take pictures with the phone she had surgically attached to her hand?

Wtf is wrong with you? You don't cut deals with proven liars. These people will attempt to weasel and lie to serve their bests interests, not yours, all the while they were at fault. Dealing with then directly is the best way to get more headaches.

No, you let your insurance company deal with them. That's what you pay for. The insurance company has dealt with lying people many times over and knows how to manage. OP did the right thing. These people don't need any favors.

Wasn't the girl ticketed in this incident? I don't see how she could not have been, nor how the police wouldn't have considered the accident to be completely her fault. Green light? So what? Wouldn't make any difference.

When I was 16 I was the one who kept getting rear ended.

First time it happened was when I borrowed the car to drive to school. It was supposed to snow so my dad didn't want me to take the car. My mom said it wasn't supposed to snow until after 6:00 so take the car.

It snowed all day.
There was at least two inches of sleet and snow on the road at the end of school.

After leaving school with a couple of friends I was waiting at a stop sign for a car spinning its tires in the intersection. A girl coming up behind me hit the brakes and slid about 4 car lengths into my car and accordioned the trunk. $800 damage to my dads Plymouth

That was the first accident of my night...

10 minutes later, trying to drop off a friend, going 10 mph, the car fishtailed and I over compensated. (this was interesting because it was a front wheel drive K-car and normally would have under-steered if not for the shitty conditions). I spun out into some lady's mailbox and sent it flying.

When I got home I called my dad and told him the first accident was my fault

He responded, "What do you mean first accident...."

The second time I was rear ended was about 6 months later. I was making a left from a blind stop behind an embankment. When I pulled out a car was coming so I hit the brakes. The woman behind me wasn't paying attention and plowed into the trunk with her full sized Ford Bronco. $1200 damage.

Fuck! Not again!

What was funny was when I saw her I actually thought to myself it would suck to be hit by one of those.....

That's what I was thinking too. Why else would you hit a fully stopped car at a redlight? The dumbass had to have been completely oblivious.
Their excuse is hilarious. Even if it was green...that's supposed to excuse them from rear-ending you?

I was 2nd in line at a red light a few weeks ago. The guy in front of me was real slow to get going when it turned green (I think it was in park for some reason), and then the person behind me just plowed right into me. Unfortunately, that was before pokemon.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago. The lady behind me was on her phone, she looked up and saw the light was green and she just jammed on the gas assuming she was holding up traffic. Unfortunately she didn't actually look to see if the line of traffic had started moving yet. It is a weird situation when you rear ended after having been at a complete stop for five minutes in a line of 30 cars.

This.

I would never, ever settle such a thing cash. Not in any circumstances - not even a friend.

I have heard of numerous cases of people who promised to pay when at the scene of the accident. When the time comes to actually hand over money, suddenly they change their story and blame the other person.

Heck, even between friends, getting money you are owed can be an issue. Can you imagine between strangers? No, I would simply hand it over to my insurance company and let them deal with it. That is what you pay them for - so you don't have to stress about this. You don't have to phone them up to remind them to pay. You don't have to ask them nicely to pay.

The insurance won't ask them nicely to pay. They will send them a letter, give them say 10 working days to pay, and then its bam see you in court. And that unfortunately is often the only way to get people to pay for things they are responsible for. It shouldn't be this way, but that is how it is.

No, most people have no idea of basic physics. Remember, you're on a tech forum. Many, if not most, on here have at least some basic education in science. Most people out there probably never took physics in high school. 'Momentum' to most people means that a given sports team seems to have the upper hand in the game and is all pumped up about it.

As to drivers these days? Most are utterly clueless of their surroundings. They have the attitude that everyone else is supposed to look out for them.

And yes, there's way too many people out there with more money /debt than brains.

I learned my lesson long ago to do the police report and go through their (or your) insurance, no matter what.
They will say anything to get out of the immediate confrontation, then renege.

I would have told them to pound sand when they offered cash, no use trying to help someone out who is being a dick. Also, let them specifically know that the reason you are going the insurance route is because of their poor attitude and hang up the phone. You dont owe them anything.

Sorry, I would have waited on insurance. The person on the phone *might* be their mom and might not. Also, sending money or picking up in public? Also, too many variables for things to go wrong.

That right there is a prime reason to buy the extra no questions asked insurance when renting a car.

or you can answer a few questions and let the credit card coverage take care of the rental for free

yup, and when the bills went to Gov Brown to toughen up hit and run violations, he said NOPE.

I like how his reasoning for denying them was his "general objection to creating new crime categories and increasing penalties was his excuse for declining these bills."

Then he passes gunmegaddon and turns 7,000,000 legal gun owners into felons overnight.

around here, unless someone is injured don't expect a police report.

I had a relative who called CHP after getting into an accident. The cop REFUSED to file a report since he deemed it too trivial for spend his time on.

I've only been rear-ended once. It was at an exit from a highway where the exit serves the west- and east-bound lanes of another road (the latter being the first exit). There was a crew painting the lines, and they were taking up about 60% of the exit. Well, I think someone wanted to take the west exit (i.e. the latter one) and realized that they could, but to do so, they braked in the lane of traffic (that's pretty common around here regardless of construction).

That's my guess as to what happened, because all I know is that I slowed down suddenly to match the speed of the car in front of me, looked up into my rear view mirror to see the car behind me not slowing down. I might have been able to react, but given the crews working on my right and the vehicles in the lane to the left of me, I don't think I would've been able to do anything.

My car ended up being totaled and the one in front of me got damaged when I got pushed into it. The person that hit me was considered at fault, so I didn't pay anything. I wasn't really mad or anything. It was just an inconvenience. In fact, apart from getting what amounted to a one-year extension on my auto loan (the car was only a year old), I ended up getting a car that I liked more for about 10% more than what it would have cost to replace my existing one with a similar model. All in all, it ended up being not too shabby for me.

You have a dashcam that would catch a rear ender?

humm lets see. camera rolling, recording playback shows the car clearly stopped at a red light, and BAM! camera jerks because of being hit from behind along with crunching metal sound.

i would say yes.
