What boggles my mind, is why doesn't every single car deck come with a USB port in the front to play music from a thumb drive? It's super easy, and cheap to implement. Screw MP3 players. You can keep a thumb drive on your keychain, and you can get 8gb of storage for $10. It's the perfect car music solution.

From what I gather by going to the new car shows every year there are many new cars with this feature. Sometimes the USB port is on the radio/dash and sometimes it is in the glovebox, but I am seeing more and more of this feature.

Yea, I've seen them here and there over the last couple of years, but they aren't ubiquitous like they should be. It's just seems so obvious to me, it's like the round wheel. How can any of these guys operate a car/semi modern technology, and not think, "Ya, know, being able to plug a flash drive in the dash would be the coolest thing ever, and make bringing music on the road easy as hell."

YESSIR! I MEAN NOSSIR. I MEAN, WHAT SIR!?

Map reading is probably only required for special forces nowadays. I mean, who really is going to be out in the bush with limited communication?

And you guys wonder why I think civilization is on the brink of disaster if communications or one critical input like oil is suddenly cut off for a while. :\

Actually, I worry more about the youts of America thinking social networking online is interchangeable with real life.

JK, I know how to read a map, my biggest pet peeve is that most modern maps give out too little information. Maps are the shit, they are the most beautiful form of art to me, a good map tells you everything you need to know about what it encompasses.

I like reading maps too. I find them fascinating, and will look them over just for the pleasure of doing so :^)

I like maps too. They're so full of interesting info and history.
there was one of those dumb reality shows where there were two teams competing in reaching various points/camps in Alaska. One team was continually complaining because all they had was a map and a compass.

This. It's called projecting. They are trying to make themselves feel better about themselves by making others feel inferior, to make up for their own inferiority complex.

Humans are funny. And dumb. Sometimes.

The trick is to find ones that aren't and listen to them. We call those scientists. They are quite fascinating with what they come up with sometimes. Too bad most people can't understand them. Fucking scientists, how do they work?

if you know all the technobabble, you must know what you're talking about! gotta weed out the good from the bad scientists too

You know what this is?

If you do, would you have at their age?

Reel used for recording audio. Only reason I know that is because of Season 4 of Eureka . See kids, TV does teach you new things!

1) In fact, the old Playstation seems to be one of the most long-lasting of the 32-bit optical media game consoles.

i disagree, my sega cd still works today. my old PS died some 8 yrs ago. disc wouldnt spin anymore.

Ichinisan's Sega CD doesn't even turn on. It's probably a fuse, which is a common enough problem, but the board an the fuses don't look anything like any of the various boards shown on GameSX's repair forums.

OK, anyone know what this is:

I'm 23, and I know what 8 tracks, vinyl records, and cassette tapes are. My parents had an old 78 van that had an 8 track in it

I think every single recent car I've ever seen in Korea has one of those

It's awesome

My e46 m3 from 2001 has a casette player! It's behind the widescreen tv, the 6cd is in the boot. It was a option to have a single slot cd behind the tv screen! Lol

one more panasonic loyalist here.

also I remember when cassette was how you loaded programs on to these new fangled "personal compootors". you whippersnappers and your fancy 8" floppy eared disks.

and yes i knew what the wire recorder cable was, learned it from a batman comic book (from the frikken 60's).

We used them in school.
I had watches with slide rules for navigation.
I also can navigate with charts and a sextant.
GPS? Who needs that. If a CME takes out the satellites I guess people are going to be SOL. So many people use these GPS devices in their cars - they probably don't even know how to read a map! D:
Old people eh?
Yeah I suppose at 46 on this forum I'm a real granny!

I'm 29 and still use paper maps. GPS are nice and all (especially on a 7" screen), but paper still trumps batteries.

Maps don't have traffic updates.

Meh. My family and I drove around the country tons (military family) long before GPS were available/affordable for consumers and never had a problem not having "traffic updates". People did it for many many years before GPS' became commonplace.

I simply assume traffic will suck in the city, and be fine on the open road barring bad weather/accidents.

does your maps find you restaurants with ratings, hotels, expected arrival times, show local attractions. i mean why not just have both? the paper map for emergencies. If your by yourself, a paper map forces you to pull over to use it, if not it can become a view hazard as your passenger has it sprawled out covering your side mirror or part of your front. GPS's talks to you in a freindly voice.

GPS makes you stupid. I've used it, but learned nothing about the route, and would have been lost if you took it from me, and I had to find my own way home. Instead of of looking for roads, and paying attention to where you are, you blindly follow orders like a dog.

I prefer to look at a map, and then sketch a quick map for myself to use on the road. The route sinks in better, and it forces you to pay attention.
