STupid Noob Q Sorry

Hi everyone, my first post, but I've been lurking for at least a month. I'm sorry this is such a stupid question, I've looked here and elsewhere on the net and can't seem to find a simple answer, so here goes:

Will older "regular" PCI cards still work in newer PCI-e slots? I know, why would you want to, well the mobos I'm looking at seem to have the PCI-e 1x and 16x slots, so I'm concerned whether my old cards will have at least a slot of home.

no, they won't...the 1x slots are much smaller than the PCI slots, although this is going the way ISA did....the first thing to adopt PCI-e (and PCI back in the early 90s) is the videocards....but other hardware is slow to adopt....and as ISA went, you will se it as a legacy port for a good number of years.

Some motherboards treat it as lesse, by putting the PCI-e above the videocard so they don't get obscured by dual slot videocards (as my BFG nForce 4 does) and leave the PCI slots to be covered....I only have 1 useful PCI slot due to my using a VF700 cooler. Just check out what motherboards you get, make sure you'll have enough for what you plan to use. PCI is here to stay for another few years. I've only seen 1 piece of hardware that uses PCI-e, and that ATI's 550 PCI-e TV/FM tuner card (got to get one!)

Some odd reason the Creative X-Fi cards don't use PCI-e (despite the games who buy it will probably have open PCI 1x slots?! fools)

It should have been pretty easy to figure out, looking at the 2 inches PCIe 1x slot vs the4 inches long PCI connector.... even the PCI-e 16x slot is not lined out with the normal PCI slots... So how do you plan to put a card in and have it fit right?

I'm thinking he was probably looking at the names of the slots, not the physical slots themselves. To someone who is unfamiliar with PCIe, the name might suggest that it is just a new pci slot that may be backwards compatible.
