Stupid people at my job

Now I'm not a police officer I'm actually an ER nurse but we see plenty of police and sheriff's officers through our doors and our security in hospital is a technically a licensed police force.

Now most of them are retired ex-military or ex-police that wanted to stay police officers but in a quieter setting of a hospital.

Now yesterday while working we had a patient who was suddenly combative threatening staff and other patients in my assigned area. He even so much as dared me to call security. So I did. And really I just wanted them to escort him out of the hospital. Now they handle stupid angry people all the time but this guy. Well, he took the cake. As soon as the 3 security officers came around the corner he charged them like a bull. Mind you he charged at the biggest security officer that is in the hospital, he's about 6'7 and 270-280 lbs and is an ex-marine.

The patient starts swinging while the other 2 officers circle around. The patient seeing this then decides to lunge for the big officer's Glock. At that moment he was gang tackled, pepper-sprayed, whacked around with a nightstick/billy club...and the dumbass still would not stop fighting and kept grabbing for the Glock...so they pepper-sprayed him AGAIN, whacked upside him head a few times, managed to handcuff him and dragged him down the hall to the holding cells.

Anyways, moral of the story, assaulting someone that has 8inches of height and 100lbs of weight that has a pistol, club, and pepper-spray and being outnumbered 3-1...usually doesn't work in your favor...

And in this case he gets to spend some quality time in an 8x8 cell.

I was just wondering that. Or maybe mental issues? Or was the guy just your garden-variety idiot?

This one was a garden variety idiot.

He might have been doing drugs/mental issues but who knows.

Good for the guards to show restraint. If I was that huge dude, I would have just broken the dude's arm.

Yup. All of them carry Glock 22 in .40S&W. Except for one, he carries a USP.

Given our location and the fact that they are a licensed police force, they definitely need to be able to carry.

Actually its funny when we get suburbanites in the ER because they get all weirded out that they have to empty their pockets, pass through a metal detector, then get a once over with a metal detecting wand and get any purses/bags etc searched. Actually getting into our ER is like a slightly watered down version of an airport security checkpoint, and again for dang good reason.

And to answer Mwilding, I've seen plenty of punitively used Narcan, not just by paramedics...

Honestly its my favorite drug to give just because of the reaction that occurs if they were doped out.

You aren't by Detroit at all, are you? Your description sounds a lot like what I hear about Detroit...

That seems like an oxymoron somehow.

I was in an ER waiting room for about 8 hours a few weeks ago. Someone there made the mistake of antagonizing/making threatening moves to the CPD officers that had brought them there. The result while entertaining for me was not so good for him.

Do not mess with the Chicago police. Even if you know you're right...just don't.
