I was signing the receipt for my credit card purchase when the clerk noticed that I had never signed my name on the back of the credit card. She informed me that she could not complete the transaction unless the card was signed.
When I asked why, she explained that it was necessary to compare the signature on the credit card with the signature I just signed on the receipt. So I signed the credit card in front of her. She carefully compared that signature to the one I signed on the receipt. As luck would have it, they matched.

I picture her slowly scrutinizing the signatures, tilting the card to get better light on it, periodically glancing accusingly at you. Grumbling under her breath, "well, I guess this checks out".

Too awesome.

I've heard that story before, in several different places. Despite what you might say, telling it in the first person does not make it any better.

hahaha...that's hilarious. I'm sorry, I'm not a mean person, but if that happened to me, I would definitely complement the person on their stupidity.

It's a true story. It's happened to me twice before. There really are stupid people out there.

Happened to me when I went to get my A+ Certification... the wench at the counter made me sign one of my IDs and whatnot and then she very carefully studied the two signatures. It turns out my signatures matched...

I had a clerk make me sign over what I had written... "CHECK I.D."

And, yes, she DID very carefully compare the signatures.

You should have made the signatures obviously different, just to see what she would do.

"check I.D." is'nt a valid signature. I know some places (like the post office) won't accept a card that says "check I.D." on it.

And I see the point of not accepting unsigned cards, but yeah, if you jsut watched one person sign two documnets, there's no point comparing the two signatures.

I don't know if yours is a parody, but it happened to me once. She said either I signed the back of my CC or show a picture ID. So I signed the back. Now I have a signed credit card, but some people still check ID regardless.

maybe it's just the store policy and she wasn't communicating correctly. i have a friend that has to do that sig thing, and all he says is, "I know, I know - just gotta do it for the cameras though..."

"Check I.D." is an invalid signature, and as such makes the card invalid. Visa tells merchants to have the customer sign over the invalid signature and compare it with a signature from another form of identification. Link

So she almost got it right.

I dont know why, but my signature changes every year.

One letter is always changing one way or another...kinda weird. Wish I had a normal signature.

it took me awhile to develop a normal signature... but then i just stopped caring, and thus, my signature was formed.

it looks like chicken scratch, but it's pretty close every time.

Wouldn't the correct procedure be just to check a picture ID? That's what I've always been told to do if the card isn't signed (retail for 2 years). I really don't care, it doesn't benefit me either way, but if the card isn't signed, yes I ask for identification. If the customer gets rude with me, I remind them that it's for their safety as a cardholder.

It may be a true story, but Brutuskend's version is plagiarized. I'm pretty sure I read this version, word for word, in a Reader's Digest.
