Stupid question

I have never gotten anything but ATA and saw a deal on a PATA how much different is it and what do I need to get with it?

well... PATA plugs into the ide port on the MoBo do you know what that is? I'm not sure what you mean when you say "I have never gotten anything buy ata". ATA is every hdd but scsi, so you havn't gotten anything but SATA? Or what, please clarify.

Hi, Pata stands for Parallel ATA and is same as IDE. Sata stands for Serial ATA and is an completely different interface.

That also confused me back then, but PATA is like your everyday IDE drive, the one with all of those nice sharp golden pins, and whereas SATA has that little nice red plug, or is it black? A smaller initerface I guess...

As far as I know, there is no standard with the color!

Such confustion. Today there are two kinds of ATA drives - parallel and Serial (PATA and SATA.) We used to speak of IDE drives, then along came SATA. It is alo an IDE drive (Integrated Drive Electronics.) So, to be technically accurate, the term PATA was coined to differentiate it from SATA.

PATA drives are simply what we used to refer to as "IDE" drives. No change - no difference.
