Stupid Shoulder

Must have pulled something in my shoulder about a week and a half ago. Tried to lay off it for awhile and then tried to fight through it last Friday, that was a mistake. Set me back 4 or 5 days probably. It's always really sore when I wake up, not sure if how I'm sleeping on it is making it worse or what.

I can't really do anything involving chest, shoulder (obviously), upper back...which are involved in pretty much everything. I can't even squat. Focused bicep, tricep, and limited lower back are pretty much the only upper body exercises I can do. It's driving me nuts.

I'm trying to stretch it every few hours...is there anything else I can do other that just keep off it?

shoulder injuries are the worst, had one a while ago that took months to fully heal. i used to lift through it but it got so bad i had to stop donig that and stopped doing all shoudler, chest, and some other exercisees for about 3 weeks. sucked but it helped.

i also got on glucosmine and that seemed to really help.

im currently working through some kind of pec muscle issue that i hurt going to deep on weighted dips. iti s kind of one of those nagging things too, where it feels 90% healed then i lift and it gets worse again. 2 weeks ago i maxed out on flat bench and then tried incline and the next day it was hurting a lot again. last monday i went light on chest, and today i went a little heavier. it feels like 90% again but i hope its 100% by next week.

With shoulder issues, they don't go away unless you address what caused it. Likely, it's something more than what time alone can heal. Does it typically ache or did this one event cause the pain?

I think I just pushed myself too hard one day and pulled something (anterior deltoid if I had to guess) somehow. I usually don't have any issues with this shoulder. I've been lifting more often and pushing harder in the last few weeks.

Most times, if you feel like you pulled your anterior delt, there's some sort of other problem leading to that. It could be capsule adhesions, it could be impingement, it could be pec minor tightness, etc. Just be careful with it.

Still bothering me. Wakes me up multiple times per night, I don't know if it's just the way I'm sleeping keeping it irritated or what. I tried to catch a football yesterday and it has gone from something that was sore when I used it to being stiff and bothering me most of the day.

Going to head to the doctor as soon as I can, but I hate going knowing that they'll likely just tell me to rest it.

Then rest it yourself, I'd still go to the doc and get it looked at. If it's a degenerative condition the sooner the better is in your best interest.

I had a shoulder injury several months ago(left), I still feel a bit of pain after my workouts now(not before though). I feel this pain most when I try to take off my shirt(crossed arms and lifting motion like a backhand motion).

back in August. i had agonizing shoulder pain and muscle stiffness in my back.
after tests/xray/MRI was done..

turns out i had a narrowed nerve opening from a bone spur at C4 and a collapsed disc at C5/6 .. the pain was worse at night and even walking caused shooting pains down my right arm. Thot it was my shoulder as i had problems in the right shoulder from years of fight training. never in my wildest dreams would i have thot of neck problems as the cause.

Don't just take their "rest it" advice. Ask for physical therapy. That way, a PT can direct therapy that will strengthen and improve proprioception, activation, etc within your rotator cuff while promoting faster healing. Seriously, doctors tend to know very little when it comes to musculoskeletal injuries. Go see a musculoskeletal specialist - i.e. a physical therapist.

I have been fighting bursitis in both shoulders for the last 15 years only thing that helps me is well besides not doing repeated motions with them is....nothing. Once you go over 40 its all down hill afterwords, I'm just waiting now and try and get everything fixed at once...lol

You ever tried going to a PT? There are better options than just accepting your injury as normal aging.

You got legs and they don't need no shoulders mang.

Do squats with dumbells if you like those. Or deadlifts. Or leg presses, machines whatever.

Oh you can do core too, abs and obliques.

Been busy, finally made it to my PCP, who's actually a sports doctor. He decided it's shoulder bicep tendonitis. He's sending me to do some PT - iontophoresis with dexamethasone. 2-3 times per week for four weeks or so. Should be interesting.

and/or chiropractor, but yeah. typically, you'd wanna see a pt for this kind of thing unless you know of a chiropractor who also does pt (which might be somewhat difficult since not too many are good at it since it's relatively new for chiropractors to offer pt at their offices).

Went to PT for the first time tonight, just for the evaluation. She seems to think it's more of a rotator cuff thing (which would have been my guess too), but it's probably a little of both.

I guess we're going to do some exercises and massaging type things for 40 min per session, then the iontophoresis for 20 minutes.

She also yelled at me for my posture, haha, knew that was coming. I think mostly she's concerned that my posture is poor while lifting, but I think it's actually pretty good.

It's always a rotator cuff issue, lol. Your posture needs to be good ESPECIALLY while lifting. Keep that in check. Also, if you find yourself thinking about your posture too much, just think "chest out about an inch." That tends to correct neck, shoulder, and lower back postural issues pretty quick. Bring your shoulders back if you're particularly hunched.

Hi,
I have suggested some tips which you can try
1.Try your best to avoid activities requiring excessive up-and-down
2.Make it a habit to take 5-10 mini breaks
3.Avoid activities involving the use of power tools that cause significant vibration.
4.For minor temporary pain relief, briefly soak the area you feel the pain in cold or
ice water.

Where do you get these copy/paste answers? They're not personalized and not constructive at all. And like I asked in the other thread, what the heck does "excessive up and down" even mean?

Monitor your lifestyle carefully. I had a shoulder problem that arose from me one arm throwing files into a cabinet from.my chair repeatedly. I stopped doing it and the issue is basically gone. Repetitive movement injuries dont just come out of your daily workout routine.

Im sure your pt visits will turn out well

I am going on 2 years of shoulder pain from carrying something too heavy while moving. Doc says surgery is the only option... good luck!

Bleh. I kind of have a feeling I'm headed there. My everyday pain is pretty much gone in the shoulder now, but it's still limited my lifting and athletic endeavors, both with pain and lost strength.

I've only been to one actual PT so far but...meh. All we did was some massage type stuff and then a bunch of machine lifting at ultra low weight, half of which hardly involve my shoulder (rows, arm bike thing). Oh, and the iontophoresis, but without the dexamethasone for some reason. We'll see.
