I have an old X48 board (Asus P5E Deluxe reflashed to Rampgae Formula)...and up til now due to heavy overclocking and still being satisfied with my system didn't have the system upgrade itch, YET.

But i will need a new system SSD soon and i am eying a 120GB Samsung 830.
(After that CR@P Supertalent Gen I Barefoot Indilinx fiasko.....).

Anyway, question:

A) Can i even USE such a new gen SSD even on an old Sata 3gb/s port?
B) Should i rather get some older gen SSD because Sata II cannot take advantage of the new SSDs?

I'd go with SATA3 even if you are running at SATA2... it future-proofs you (at least for the next week or so...) and would be the most modern incarnation of that product (with up-to-date firmware, etc) I don't think there would be much difference in cost between a SATA2 and 3 SSD drive, anyway.

If you don't plan on upgrading your entire system soon then I'd get a sata 2 SSD.

Don't get a shitty SATA2 drive. My x120e laptop only supports SATA2 and I have a 120GB SATA3 SSD in there, boots up in less than 20 seconds and scores 7.6 in WEI. It's definitely faster than my 60GB SATA2 Vertex2 was in my desktop computer in terms of measurable SSD speed.

I'm not sure why you'd get a SATA3gb drive either. Maybe if you find a larger capacity Intel 320 on sale, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it.

I was in the same situation when choosing between the Intel SSD 320 and SSD 520. I went with the 520 just because of its greatly improved random r/w speeds over the 320. Granted you'll have a perf penalty when using sata2 over sata3, but the greatest penalty is sequential r/w which hardly matters (unless you do lots of large file transfers). I'll do some research as to how the Samsung SSD 830 performs in comparison with the Intel 320 (I suspect the Samsung will blow the Intel 320 off the charts in terms of random r/w speeds). I will also compare the prices of the drives, and decide if the extra (if any) price is worth the extra speed.

that card^ will only be running at the paltry Marvell sata chips known limitations of around 400/250 with lower random performance(writes in particular) than the ICH10R would have. Latency will be worse than the onboard solution, as well.

palladium already summed it up quite nicely.

I have a Marvell SATA6gb add-in card, I've never used it, never will. There's no need, Intel integrated (ICH10R in my case) is going to be vastly superior and tests back that up. Intel's engineering is second to none.
The only thing it might be slower is the SATA3gb cap, which isn't the most important metric.

I have an even older board (P965 chipset, 2006 launch date) and a brand new SATA3 SSD and it works great, the thing flies. I bought it with a forward outlook (building an Ivy Bridge PC in April). There's no point in saving a few bucks with current gen SATA2 drives because they often use slower async NAND. The price difference to go higher end sync/toggle isn't that much these days on the 120/240GB capacities if you pick the right drive.

I put the Samsung 830 256GB in my Dads computer and he has SATA II. He said the system is much, much faster than his X25-M + Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz.

SATA II speeds

I have mine on an add in 6gb card and it gets similar numbers on everything but seq R/W (which is about 2x higher). Go ahead and get one you wont be disappointed.
