Stupid Windows problems...SOLVED!

OK, so I'm trying to get my other computer I just built online to get Windows updates...and just to get online. Unfortunately I can only get dial-up, so I go about making a new connection using the wizard under Network Connections, which I finish. Then right after I click Finish, a message pops up saying something like, "The network connection could not be made due to insufficient memory or disk space." No idea what to make of this. It's a brand new build, so there's hardly anything on the HD and I'm running 512MB of RAM. Anyone have any ideas??

Weird! Are other programs running fine? What do you see in Windows Task Manager?

Hmm, asuming it's an add-on card for the modem, did you install the drivers for it, or let windows do it? I'm not sure about your specific error message (it is odd), but sometimes windows doesn't install the best drivers for hardware.

The EXACT error message would likely help.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to check the XP System Event and Application Event Logs for any errors related to this problem.

Doubt this is the case, since that would be assuming all PC's with XP and less than a gig of ram are bloated to the point of being inoperable from the get-go (yes, xp is bloated, but not that bad).

Maybe a MBR problem? Maybe try defragging, and see if the problem goes away.

If you don't have enough virtual/system memory available, you can easilly tell in the 'performance' tab of the xp task manager (ctrl+alt+del menu).

Haha, you know it...sucks pretty bad.

And I posted this a while ago and I think I fixed it but don't really remember what I did...it was a build I did for a friend, so that's why it's not still my memory bank. I think what I did was just search the exact error at microsoft.com and troubleshot from there. Thanks a lot guys!
