Does any on have experience with this lens?
I have seen it running around $75
does any one know of another lens of this price range?

Does not have to be Canon.

Thanks!

it's a nice cheap little lens. Not the sharpest tool in the box.. but hey, it's $75. Keep in mind if you end up getting anything later w/ USM/HSM/equiv and/or amazing build quality, you will then be very very spoiled. Just remember the fact this lens was probably 1/3 the price of the others

i think you can get it new for about 75 bucks.

it's not wide angle, though. on the xti it'll be a short telephoto.

you shouldnt really be without this lens in your bag, its cheap enough that you havent got an excuse not to have it!

i find its pretty damn sharp at F8 on my 400D.

its not the best built lens, and if possible i'd try go for a mk I version for its metal mount and distance scale, but it definately worth having.

You can use Flickr's tag search to view example shots of any lens:

wow it seems promising

yeah you gotta be careful, on the budget SLR's their smaller sensors introduce a crop factor on lenses that were designed with 35mm in mind.

All the Canon EF lenses will be subject to the crop factor, so on the 400d.... whatever your focal length is (in this case 50mm) you need to x by 1.6...

on a 35mm film cam, or a SLR with a 35mm sized sensor this lens is 50mm
on budget SLRs like the canon 400d, its equivalent to an 80mm lens on a 35mm camera. so thats going into telephoto area.

EF-S lenses are the ones designed to cater for the smaller sensors in the budget SLR's so if this was an EF-S lens (which they dont make i dont think) 50mm = 50mm.

i think every other makers budget SLRs have a crop of x1.5, yet canons is 1.6 lol wierd.

nope, doesn't work that way. the numbers are still actual focal lengths, not 35 mm equivalents. EF-S lenses are supposed to make wide angle lenses better (cheaper) by extending deeper into the body. as everyone else has managed to make crop body specific lenses without doing so, i think canon is full of it and that EF-S is pointless.

every other make uses sony sensors. except olympus, and they have a 2x factor (not a crop factor, as it is full frame for it's design, although i still think that terminology is ridiculous)

All of these crop factors are useful for photographers who come from the film camera. They relate to 35mm equivalency. It may be a crop factor, but I think of it as a multiplication factor. It relates to the actual size of the imaging sensor as compared to a 35mm film frame.

This illustrates: 35mm

Olympus has gone to a 4/3 format, and a few others have joined - examples, Panasonic and Leica (A rebadged Panasonic.) There are others.

Canon has 2 full frame cameras - 1Ds and the 5D. The 1D has a 1.3 factor. All the rest are 1.6. Nikon is 1.5 except for their full framer.

What does it mean? It means that full framers gain wide angle, but get no more than what the lens says for telephoto. The rest lose some width in the wide angle but gain in the telephoto region.

In practical terms, that little 50mm f/1.8 EF lens by Canon is excellent value. In terms of 35mm film equivalency, it provides the same field of view as an 80mm - an excellent lens for portrait work.

I used that little lens for over a year with my old D60 - and it produced some very good shots. I eventually replaced it with the 50mm F/1.4 for low light work.

I love my nifty 50. Wouldn't leave home without it. It's a great lens and a great deal -- you will not find anything even close in terms of quality for $75 bucks. Plus it's valuable as a photographer to learn how to zoom with your feet, and also to have the range down to 1.8 (although in practice I try to keep it north of 2.2). Buy it, buy it, buy it.

I, and many other users here, have this lens. It might be the best piece of camera equipment I've ever purchased, especially when you consider the price.
