Subfloders and content "Access Denied"

OKey Dokey, now that I fried my brain or what's left of it. This problem is a little bizzare. However I think I may know the casue, but I don't know the cure. I was installing WIN XP PRO on my friends computer and somewhere along the line I lost access to all the contents on the D (data) drive. I can view all the contents, but cannot open. I beleive it was a result of trying to re-establish the home networking. If encryption was set although I DID NOT invoke it, I understand that can cause this type of a problem.
Any ideas?

if you reinstalled ,and the account your using , is a different name than the one that originally created the files , then you have to take ownership of them. if they were encrypted and the key was not backed up , your SOL.

Since I've never had a reason to encrypt any data files on another drive is there a routine or action that would expressly use the term "Encrypt" to envoke that action. If so; this problem would have to be related to your first suggestion. There was a bit of havock going on when I first started the install which lead to another install. The first install lead up to crazy security setting etc and it was just getting worse. However, I don't remember the name for when I did the first install and it's highly possible it was different. I was trying to make it easier for me to remember when setting up the network and drive sharing.

So the long and the short of it is, how do you take ownership? I will continue to use the help guide to assist me, but it's wearing me thin.

Thank you, I believe I have done this but I will double check. I believe when I did that it told me I had to audit the policy because of the fiasco I had leading up to this. I'm not totally sure... so what I'm doing is collecting all the info leading off to various directions and will sit down with another comupter and do a comparision with that one and the C drive. I can't believe I did this. It's not like I'm a virgin to computers.
