Yep its awesome. Scary as HELL going out into the deep water, seeing the sunrays shine down so far that they disappear into the depths, or looking down and seeing nothing but darkness. The game is the most unique and different thing I've played in years. I didn't even know what the hell to do when I started the game for the first time. I literally had no idea how to play, and that's saying a lot since most games these days are just more of the same old crap.
I kept dying of thirst and hunger and felt a sense of frustration but couldn't stop playing. Now I am starting to wrap my mind around building my first base because I have learned some basics and I'm ready to plan that next stage. The game is just amazing really. I can't believe it.
Every time I find a really great game, I feel kind of sad because I feel those games are very rare and I don't expect to find another really interesting game for a long, long time. But after starting Subnautica, I told myself, "Well I'll be damned. Another diamond in the rough. Here we go again!".
Who knows how long it will be before another great game comes along and surprises me. I'm glad I have this one to explore right now. It should keep me busy for quite a while.

The game reminds me of the movie sanctum, nothing like going too deep in caves while knowing you don't have enough air to get back to the surface.

Minor spoilers what the game is like
The first 80% is really well designed at rewarding exploring, at first you swim a little and see great environments, then more and find new stuff, and it gradually adds building useful things that are fun, then ohmigosh a neat personal submarine for travel and so on. And the story had a lot. It is amazing. By the last parts, I was surprised to find I kind of lost interest spending hours to do something carefully.

Oh yeah, if you buy the game make sure to NOT watch youtube videos and read "how to" articles or whatever. This game is easily spoiled. Go into it completely ignorant and do it all yourself for the first time. Its great. Don't even read this thread actually. Just buy the game. OK now you can stop reading the thread.

I have been considering getting this. About how long does it take to reach the end? I assume it greatly varies, but I guess, on average

I don't know, but I'd give it like 30-40 hours for that? It has lots you can enjoy to take longer.

If you're dedicated to set goals, carefully read your pda info, and have good luck on finding certain tech schematics, probably 30-50 hours. Last year, just goofing around with base building and ignoring the unfinished story after the first 10-15 hours I spent 70 hours playing the game. Since 1.0 I've spent another 30.

I've had my eye on this for a while. Do you think it would run decently on a MS Surface Laptop i7? Thanks

Honestly the game does not run all that well on even high end hardware, there are lots of issues with pop-in and low framerate. The most important thing for this game is to have it installed on a SSD as it relies heavily on streaming data from the hard drive.

The game has good framerate as a foundation, but has some stutters and hitches. Honestly this game is impressing me so much I don't care about the performance issues. Would be nice if they weren't there, but honestly the game is actually running pretty damn great on my rig with those little exceptions. I didn't even think about the end game either. I was just stuck on a water planet trying to figure out what to do to not die and I read somewhere that there was an ending to the game. That was my first spoiler and made me sad. I want it to go forever! I hope there is a sequel to this game.

Just picked this game up on sale from steam and having a blast.

The progression system is nice and the survival elements strike a nice balance of tension and allowing you to explore. The story is also intriguing and I really like the base building.

I can tell this game is going to be a slow burn for me, really relaxing experience, and feels like the movie 20,000 leagues under the sea. Saying that I haven't went more than 300m bellow sea yet.

It finally happened.

I wrecked my cyclops.

First time in over a dozen play-thru's.

I didnt ram it into the rocks either. I went a little too far exploring and a gang of leviathans bum rushed me. Kept taking damage too quickly. Couldnt escape, extinguish fires, and repair the hull fast enough. Went down on a stone pillar, side opened up, whole thing flooded, AND I lost my friggen Seamoth!!

But, I was able to recover everything inside, and I took out the 6 power cells, which actually make up for a lost Seamoth. So now I build another one, and try to be a little more careful next time.

I'm guessing it was early enough in the game that you didn't have the shield yet? I've found that between the shield and decoys I can get away from anything with only minor damage. I took a stroll around the void in mine just get some screen shots of the ghosts.

Also, the fire suppression system is your friend.

I lost mine as well a few weeks ago, honestly it wasnt a big loss i didnt have much in it, i was able to get the power cells and into my seamoth and make a run for it just before it went down for good.

I didnt bother rebuilding it either, figured anything it could do the prawn and seamoth could do better anyways.

Sure its alright as a mobile base but ive got small bases setup all over the map now so really i dont need the big sub.

The main function your cyclops serves is a carrier for the PRAWN. Much easier to get around the map than walking and jumping.

I had a close call yesterday.

I'm not that experienced using the Cyclops yet, maybe under 5 hours piloting. Anyway it was pitch black heading into uncharted territory when I was attacked by what I think we're two Reapers. Immediately shut engine's down, turned lights off. There were no further attacks, then all of a sudden one swims near the top of Cyclops, but no aggression. I checked the radar and once it left out of range I turned the engine's back on. Tried to backtrack for only to get attacked again, then I hear another bang, half my hull was gone. At that point I panicked, turned on emergency flank speed, was hit again, but that was the least of my problems.

Not 20 seconds into flank speed the Cyclops burst into flames. I was out of the enemies sight but now I had fires everywhere, the Cyclops status HUD lit up like a Christmass tree and at that point there was about a 1/4 HP left, warnings were going off, smoke was filling up, shit got hairy and intense real fast.

In the end I just barely got the fires out with about 100 left in HP.

The most intense experience I've had from a game in awhile.

True, it is useful for that. But i really love piloting the prawn, not sure why i just do, and its pretty mobile with the JJ upgrade and grapple arm.

New "Below Zero" expansion officially announced:

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/subnautica-below-zero/

Not an expansion, but a full standalone game. Set in a different location of the same world, and using the same engine. Their Trello also says that they are shooting for 1/6th the size of the original game. So, basically a DLC that they want to charge full price for.

I loved Subnautica but they never really got the game working all that well. It is still riddled with game breaking bugs, and even on high end hardware the game runs terrible with terrain popping in at the last second, sometimes it is so bad you actually get trapped in wreckage that pops in around you.

It feels like instead of fixing the game they already sold us, they want to sell it to us again to fix it. Assuming they do fix it and don't just sell us a still broken reskin

Don't get me wrong, the game is so good I'm still going to buy it even if it still has all the bugs, so I guess their plan works. But I am going to be buthurt about it.

Yeah the price better be $10-15. If its more this isnt worth it.
