I thought Subway had decent quality before they hit it big and spread everywhere. After that the bread left an aftertaste in my mouth and I saw the visual appeal of their meats start to decline. Flavorless tomatoes and weak pickles, and some locations only stock yellow and honey mustard. No spicy brown for a good samich? Fook this noise!

I miss Firehouse Subs with a fiery passion now, thanks guys.

I agree that they've gone downhill. I think several years back they did a big push for consistency across their chains, which then forced their mediocre level across the board. Before that, I ate at a few Subways that were competitive with average deli (other than certain meats and that was more because they didn't stuff them full of ultra thin sliced cuts), getting fresher veggies, etc.

I don't even think they're great, but people calling them the worst fast food are completely out of their minds. I've easily had worse food from pretty much every burger place.

Firehouse is ok, but the couple of times I've eaten there it wasn't much better than Subway in my opinion, and considering my food cost 50% more (and came with less meat than I get at Subway) it wasn't a great value. I felt the same about Quizno's, I liked it ok, but sandwiches aren't worth the prices they were asking. Apparently some people live where they can walk 5 feet and be able to choose from 10 different delis that sell 6 inch thick loaded with meat and cheese from freshly slaughtered animals and fresh from France artisan cheeses for $2 or something.

Moreover, Camire says, Subway likely adds to its processed chicken a highly concentrated soy protein with yeast flavoring. This is a common binding and flavoring ingredient, and the manufacturer that makes Subway’s chicken provides similar chicken to other restaurants. With an artificial soy protein product like that, Camire wasn’t sure how much DNA would even be in it.

but WHY?!

Got a chicken sub from wawa tonight for dinner. I wasn't pleased. I should have known better. I've come to dislike chicken, but I wanted a hot sub, specifically a cheesesteak, but they didn't have that, so I got the chicken. Live and learn...

Gotta make your own. I just finished eating hot cheesesteak like 5 minutes ago. Wife sliced ribeye steaks really thin and cooked it on the electric griddle along with onions, mushrooms, and provolone cheese on TJ's french bread.

I like philly cheesteak. Make it occationally. I just buy frozen thinly sliced ribeye meant for hotpot.

I do not know why some of you love Firehouse Sub. I ate there a couple times, it was decent but nothing to write home about.

I guess imo all of the national chain subs are neck and neck (some are a tad better tastewise). If I want a great sub or sandwitch, I would have to go to a local deli.

I eat there all the time. If anything, they are expensive for what you get. Mostly bread.
The latest thing I experienced like two weeks ago was a banner that said all subs were $6. Awesome so I thought. I get the turkey, bacon avacado which is normally $8.25 I think but what is this, they removed it and all their other expensive subs from their menu. So this $6 deal is bullshit. All those subs that usually cost $7.25 are now $6. I could have gotten what I wanted if I added on to a turkey sub but now it cost over $10 and $11-12 when the promo ends.

I'm just pretty certain that Subway is the ultimate piece of crap when it comes to mass market fast food.

Subway is expensive, but I really doubt this report.

Unless the chicken is ground and mixed with soy product, there is no way only 50% chicken meat is used.

I enjoy a five guys burger but it is pretty poor quality patty. In-n-out definitely out classes it in the cheese/patty/bun category. Not to mention it cost 28 dollars for 2 people, one of them being a woman, the last time I went to 5 guys. That costs as much as going to an actual restaurant and getting a really good burger.

It's a SHITTY quality patty. Everything else about Five Guys is fine albeit overpriced. But the burger flat out sucks, they might as well be using 50% kangaroo and 50% capybara.

With Jimmy John's and now Jersey Mikes everywhere, there is very little reason to ever go to Subway. Their food is edible but compared to other chain fast food sandwich joints, it's the bottom of the barrel.

I am going to have to go to Jersey Mikes now soon after participating in this thread. They did open one in Manhattan and it's about a 30 minute commute for me using mass transit trains and walking.

That's worth it for a sub that good. All the delis and pizza joints near me are nothing special, although all better than Subway by far. They are respectable, and some do have some sandwiches they excel at.

Spiced ham and cheese done Mike's Way. I get it every time and it's amazing. They shred the lettuce and slice the onions thin. They put the right amount of meat on it. They don't put too much oil & vinegar on it. Much love.

In college, I ate Jimmy John's Vito sandwich couple nights a week. This was before Jimmy John's started franchising and only had couple of local stores in Illinois. The big draw was they delivered even late. Most of my delivery orders were around midnight when it freezing outside with snow and ice and they would still deliver even though it was just one or two subs. It's crazy they're now nationwide and the sandwich delivery model actually works. I thought it was pretty cool I could get sandwich delivered but I didn't think it was a viable business plan. Shows you how much I know.

Couple years ago when I saw they had opened a store in GA, I stopped by and ordered the Vito sub for nostalgia sake. I don't know it's because Jimmy John's are all franchised now or my tastebuds have evolved since college but the Vito sub wasn't good as I remembered. It was bland and rather disappointing. But it was still cheap. I guess cheap, delivery, and good enough taste are winning combo.

You're goddamn crazy and out of your mind. Jersey Mike's is not worth 30 minute commute of trains and walking. I wouldn't do that if they offered me free sub. Damn, I don't even use the buy one get one sub coupon they send me in the mail and I have Jersey Mike's less than 1 mile from my house. Jersey Mike's ok but it's extremely overpriced and no where near the best sub. You live in NJ/NY and claim they have the best shit and you can't find a good local deli that you have to commute 30 minutes to eat at Jersey Mike's? Are you for real? I live GA and I can find better place than Jersey Mike's. I'm sure as heck not commuting 30 minutes to eat a sub. Ridiculous. We have Publix supermarket here and the store deli has subs that's just as good or better than Jersey Mike's for about half the price. Publix is why I don't go to Jersey Mike's, Subway, Jimmy John's, and Firehouse Subs. I have all those sub chains and Publix less than 5 minutes from my house. So I just go to Publix when I'm in the sandwich mood and don't want to make it at home.

Yah mon. For spiced ham and cheese I know of no better. Besides a place where I grew up but that's 45 minutes by car. I'm sure I could find an amazing deli if I started testing out places in nearby towns, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I hate driving. I much prefer walking or mass transit. For an Italian sub I'll go to a local Italian Deli. And for stuff like you know chicken with roasted red peppers and mozzarella and all that jazz. But I have a softness for spiced ham and cheese subs, since I was a youngun. Jersey Mike's is one of my favorites for that sammy so I'll stick with it.

The one I always went to in Pensacola was pretty damn good I thought. That's in BBQ country though too, where they throw a lot of food at you so maybe that figured into it idk. I always gave them marks for consistency, and don't recall it being much more than a Subway. As a lightweight chilihead I liked the hot sauce selection. Agreed though that nothing beats a privately owned deli, especially the ones that do their own meats. If I'm able to cruise around and choose that's my preference, otherwise I'll look out for a Boar's Head sign. Some supermarkets have impressive value too. More often than not I make my own though. I'm kinda picky about my bread, and like to know where the meat comes from.

No, not all deli's will magically be better than subway. I always find it funny that people automatically think that small food joints/restaurants are automatically better than chains. Well they are not. That's a big reason why so many restaurants go under. You can find them of course as we all do but not all non-chain food places are automatically better than chains.

Publix deli for the win for subs IMHO.
