Successor to 7800GTX?

I've been planning on building my first system for a long time now, and finally am in a position to start doing it.

Obviously the 7800GTX is the fastest on the block right now, and it's very tempting for me to just go ahead and pick one up and get things rolling.

However, I know ATI's R520 is coming (so they say), and have heard rumours of a 7800GT Ultra released to compete with the R520.

I've waited so long to build my system that I'm now starting to grow really impatient, but if I drop $500 or more on a video card, I'd be really disappointed if the "next, faster" generation came out a mere month later.

Any recommendations on what would be the best strategy here would be appreciated, i.e. just pick up the 7800GTX now or wait a little longer for its successor (as long as it's not more than a month or two).

I couldn't wait any longer so I picked up two 7800GTX's for my system.
I would just get them now or an x800XL to last you through the times until the next major upgrade.

Oh boy, it just came out, its successor wont be here in a month, just buy it or a freakin radeon 9200 or FX 5200 and get on with your life....

Anyway, I'd never buy a top of the range card, they depreciate so fast....

Is there a 7800GTX that is superior to others? BFG, LeadTek, etc.? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Well, this article from The Inquirer is what prompted my question, mainly the quote below:

----We talked to the channel and resellers, and they all agrees that at least some of the enthusiast customers are holding back and waiting for either an Ultra version of Geforce 7800 or the ATI R520 part. If you want to spend $500 or more, you want the best card that will last for a while, and now many people expect that the Geforce 7800GTX is simple going to be overturned soon.---

The "going to be overturned soon" especially caught my eye. Just wondering what and when.

The XFX has the highest core clock speed at 490MHz, but I went with BFG for their great support and lifetime warranty.

get a radeon x800 XL, save the extra money for more important things.
