Successor to the Dell 2001P?

Hello,

First off let me state that I am a gamer, and a fps gamer at that, so I would require an lcd w/ a low response time, no ghosting, good color saturation, etc etc.

Also I would like sharp text as well.

With that out of the way the next requirement is size:

19" is a minimum but I would prefer 21".

This narrows the boat more so. Money is not to much of an object as i've kept my Viewsonic Pf790 for 6 years through 3 separate systems! I want something that is quality. Probably in the $800 - $1500 price group.

I've read the anandtech review along with other reviews saying that the 2001P is the industry benchmark now but it's beginning to show its age. Any ideas when a new model is coming out?

Also, what are the alternatives? I looked at the monitors in the " system building guide" and the sony is Nice but I've read bad for gaming and DVD playback so it is out of my book.

Can anyone provide any information/suggestions? To note: this will probably be a purchase in Q2 '05

Thanks!!!

[edit] Why does no one ever review the apple cinema displays? The 20/23" models come with a 16ms response time and much the same specs as other lcd's. What is their glaring flaw (outside of price). Thanks!

Ridiculous.

concur. 2001FP is still very much the benchmark LCD screen - just got one, so I am little fanboy-ish here .

Great sharp (super-crisp) text, and there is also no need to adjust the DPI setting if you are coming from 21" crt @ 1280x1024x32 like me - the text size difference is negligible, and worth it since the text is super-sharp (or is it 'ultrasharp' ::cheesy:

I am a gamer also, and play FPS mostly (HL2, BF1942 etc) - and this monitor rules - even when running in non-native resolutions (I cant stress that enough - I run the BF1942 at 1280x960 and the clarity and textures are amazingly sharp compared to my CRT. I have, several times, just stopped in the middle of the game to stare at the amazing clarity of the display, only to be instantly fragged by someone next to me LOL). But the underlying point is - gaming on this LCD made me a believer, finally.

2001FP is still the best LCD monitor as per Dec issue of Maximum PC. Their other best LCD is the HP L2335 which is like $1800 (if you have the money, that may be the better monitor).

Anyway, buy 2 of these babies and you'll be set for years to come (personally speaking, I am like you in that I've had my trusty old 21" sony trinitron monitor for 5+ years now, so I pay top dollars - that is $700-$900 in my book - for my monitors).

Thanks for the good reply!

I was just wondering if there was something else coming down the pipeline that I should wait for or just put the money down on the 2001FP now. I truly love the look of the Cinema Displays but after reading a few reviews it does not appear that you get your bang for the buck. I was worried about running the lcd in non-native resolution as my 9700 pro is beginning to be a little bit long in the tooth [time to upgrade eh?] and I do not forsee putting together another system for another year [ 2.8@ 3.2 ghz P4c currently].

I might just have to get this as long as there is no word of anything else. Although that HP monitor looks tasty!

If you like the cinema displays go with the 2005FP, if you find a few coupons you can have it now for $600. It is the same exact panel as the apple 20" cinema display, and has a slight response time advantage over the 2001FP, plus its widescreen, which is just nifty. Along with that most games are starting to natively support widescreen resolution, and the ones that dont can be forced to do so.

I just got a 2005 last week. I was concerned about which one to get also. I have never seen the 2001 and I am quite sure is is an excellent product, but I am totally satisfied with the 2005. The widescreen realy does wonders for your viewing pleasure. I thought I would never watch a dvd on a computer but I did and it was great. Gaming is another sweet spot. The kids love it. It also helps when you have a good sound system of which there are many.

Good Luck...
Whatever you get I just hope you don't have any pixel or backlight problems

one other note, when i first saw it come it give me a feeling of being in a movie theatre with the wideness

I disagree - the 12ms response time quoted for the 2005FPW is gray-to-gray; it's black-to-white response time is still 16ms - which makes it *exactly* the same as 2001FP.

However, the 2005FPW is rated at contrast ratio of 600:1 (vs. the 400:1 for the 2001FP) - and if you are going to be watching movies on your PC, then it's very useful (personally doesnt appeal to me - I prefer to take all my TV/Video needs to my 46" sony tv in my family room!).

^ that fact combined w/ the seemingly bad backlighting issue on a lot of the 2005's turned me off. I managed a 25% coupon now I just need to get a $45 one

Anyone have one they would be wiling to give up...??

the 2005 is experiencing some problems because it is new. by the time you make your purchase i am sure dell would have resolved all manufacturing issues, if any.

get the 2001 fp. best deal right now is around $450+tax with Amex dell coupon(this coupon goes for 50-80 on eBay. ).
