Yeah yeah OT whatever, go ahead and lock it, blah blah blah... but I felt the need to share my 2cents worth here. This is the biggest and the best, and the no coupon policy is fine, whatever floats Anand's boat, the idea of litigation is a little scary to anyone, so I'll just assume Anand is playing it safe, fine with me, it's his site. But the Fat Wallet Xmas thing with the $600 dollar present bought for the mod got my attention. Shouldn't the mods here (or in any forum) be more of a friend than a foe? When people here post they seem to worry a lot, saying things like, "I hope this isn't locked" or "I hope this doesn't give me a suspension." The constant posts by "mod-wannabes" constantly state their guesses on how long the thread stays up before being locked. Why do mods have to be feared and despised by users instead of being respected and loved? The threads where people nearly beg the mods not to lock a forum show the way things have become. The overzealousness of mods to lock a thread in this forum is unnecessary and unfair. I agree with many of the locks mods put on threads, but there are a LOT that were unfairly locked, such as vendor complaints or product reliability concerns, or even the simple joke now and then. I don't know about the mods, but I consider being informed that a product/vendor that was advertised in this forum is shoddy a hot deal. This also ties in with the lawsuit issue, if the mods knowingly lock a thread that contains information about an unscrupulous vendor, couldn't that bring on some form of lawsuit? I would believe so, with the way our legal system is today. All I'm saying is the mods should lighten up a bit.

well if they do allow certain things to slide by, at what point should they stop the useless posts? i would go on, but it's pretty much the same slippery slope theory. also, without fear people will just do as they please-- it's needed to keep people in check. i would go looting everyday if it werent for those damn cops and our legal system =)

just be glad that the mods are active. i've been on some forums where the mods are inactive and it turns into a flaming warz. i would prefer it if the mods just delete the OT posts, but whatevers.

Well I agree with you that mods are needed, and I am glad they're active; but I disagree that such stringent procedures are necessary. You don't see fatwallet dying because of the mod, do you? I just think the mods could do so with a little more compassion and a little more respect, not the usual "I am mod, fear me or die" tactics I've seen used.

I kind of agree, I didnt like the fact that the ashford post got deleted. I still browse this forum but for the real and uncesored deals I have begun to go to fatwallet.

The Fatwallet people have collected something like $700 so far for a xmas present for Tim (Fatwallet mod).

Can you imagine that happening here? The mods here are a little different to say they least, they take more of an overseer approach, just stepping in when the kids needs to straigtened out. Anyone know the mod(s) name? Get my point? Nothing wrong with that, it's just not the type of interaction that gives a sense of community like on see on other boards.

There is a big difference here... Tim isn't just a mod over at fatwallet, he is the CREATOR of fatwallet. Fatwallet is a community that benefits all it's members, and the members are grateful and just giving back to the person who made it possible. So than why don't we get anand a gift? Well basically we are... we are giving him the business as this place is his source of income. He makes quite a lot of money from this site and well I'm sure $600-700 doesn't even mean much at all compared to what comes out of this site. Also Anand doesn't take such an active role on these forums as Tim does on his own forum, running around posting coupons and doing contests for the members, that is why Tim is so well respected

How can a "hot deals" forum prohibit coupon codes being posted? I'm getting tired of looking around for codes after a deal has been posted here. Didn't the whole issue come about after the staples fiasco a while back? And why is anandtech being singled out for legal prosecution? I mean what about all these hundreds of coupon sites and other forums where coupon posting is not only allowed, but welcomed? Maybe a move is in order?

I feel that the anandtech forum is the best 'deal' forum out there - due at least in part to the rules and the mods. I certainly see the need for rules - as opposed to a free-for-all. Additionally I greatly appreciate the ban on affiliate links!

However I am a bit perplexed by the strict ban on posts which are NOT in and of themselves bargains. Yes I understand the need to cut down on clutter, but the end result is that it moves the clutter into the threads. Take a look at any given thread and you'll see that it wanders all over the place - info, arguments, specs, comments, humor, refuted info, etc. etc... To a certain extend it's human nature! This forum has become a community of sorts.

The result is that you cannot START a thread unless it's a DEAL - but once a thread is started you can say anything you want. The threads tends to include all the miscellaneous discussions which CAN and DO go completely off topic. TECHNICALLY that stuff should be in the iwanna or brag&moan threads. What's the distinction?

Quarantining requests and questions to an 'iwanna' thread makes it cumbersome to ask questions and find the answers. It also forces people to sneak those questions into the existing threads. Of course there's the folks that pay no attention to the rules and post their questions anyway... then the inevitable hand slappers telling them how bad they are... perhaps someone answers the question... and finally the thread is locked.

BTW, I enjoy this forum and attempt to contribute in constructive manner.

Tim of Fatwallet actually joins in on the discussion and could almost be called a "user."
The mods here are simply the police. Nothing more. We know absolutely nothing about them. But they do crack me up every now and then

I remember the good ol' days of anandtech before the mods hit puberty and the surge of hormones resulted in the anal retentive policing of this forum.

You must remember, this place is run by a bunch of teenagers.

lets sign an email petition to anandtech and tell them we neeeeed the coupon codes...or else its just pointless... this is a free message board...
otherwise fatwallet might just be a "better" (as in easier to get the deals) site after all

Also, as Tim over @ fatwallet said(not quoting him, but he said something to the effect of)...Anandtech is a tech site, not a Free/Hot Deal site, and they (Anandtech) are doing what they feel they need to do".

I'm not saying whats been happening here is right, but i understand it.

my $.0000002 just to remind everyobdy that fatwallet.com was initially brought to popularity by anadtech users who had a problem with anand's prude policies on the hotdeal forum. that was a pretty big deal when they changed it. now i have to check 2 sites on a regular basis but anadtech is still the best! well, at least it has the broadest base of users..... and therefore, almost always, the best and latest of the good deal. ...ok, where is the lock??

This site is projected to bring in million dollars in advertising sales this year. They also purchased a two acre plot for their new building (source Sony Style magazine, Holiday 2k issue). So I wouldn't be too surprised if they try to keep things somewhat orderly to protect their investment.

Listen up Stfu, if you are too lazy to look up coupon codes on the numerous other sites in cyberspace, then please go away, your input is valueless.

fatwallet is a great site. It's large enough to get all of the deals, many times before anandtech, but it also is small enough to still be a community. A few members are personally friends of Tim, and I would consider myself one of those people. He does things such as give nicknames to some of the more active users. He deals with his site on a personal level, and cares for all of his members.

Furthermore, the mods at fatwallet are very lax on most issues and threads rarely get locked unlike some other sites. But when they need to they still step in.

Just my 2 cents....
