Sudden decision

Hello. I am trying to decide if I should walk away from an offer. COVID has not been nice to anyone, and my current position roles may be changing. There is an offer that I must reply to tomorrow. The pay is the same to start. The cost of living is slightly higher. However, it is a bigger organization with the possibility of moving up appearing to be better. I would need to move quickly if I accept the offer. Any suggestions?

If COL is higher and pay the same, I would think long and hard about it. Movement up the latter is one thing, but although a possibility, it may take years or could not happen. If the difference is slight, then do it. I made a few of those mistakes with COL, but that was before the easily accessible information of today. Make a list of the “pros” and “cons” and then make the decision accordingly.

Edit: Moving is a big deal, but it could be rewarding. It all depends on your age, the place, the company, as well as the time to invest in learning a new area. Moving is the second most stressful time in your life behind starting a new job.

It would be a longer commute to work. The cost to rent or own is significant. Taxes would increase as well.

Another thing to consider, moving to a new company, is that if that company suddenly is looking to shed workers you could be out on your butt quickly since you just started so they are saving from having to invest in you by cutting you ASAP. Just because its a bigger company doesn't mean much as a lot of them use times like this to consolidate their employees. Of course you might be a hire there to replace them looking to offset higher wages of someone that had been there for some time.

Not trying to scare ya out of it, but keep that in mind, as the current situation could change things quickly. Tough choice for sure.

Based on this information, my advice would to not take the new position. I see nothing but downside and risk to you.

I'm conservative, so my inclination is always to stay put. The devil you know, and all that. I'm not seeing too many upsides for you aside from some hand wavy 'in the future' stuff, that may not even pan out.
I never found an opportunity sitting around. I've always had to take initiative, track something down, and move to get it.
So in that sense I am aggressive, not conservative.

I guess I've always been pretty happy with what I had, and only moved for an obvious and overwhelming improvement. Also, money isn't a big motivating factor for me. In the past, I've had offers to jump ship, and time's shown that would have been a bad choice. I haven't maximized my income by my choices, but I've done pretty well for satisfaction.

To me that move does not make sense. higher cost of living AND longer commute? If the pay was double or more maybe, but not for the same pay.

Work to live, not live to work. Unless you WANT to move to that area, don't move there just for a job. Moving also always ends up costing more money, so you have to consider how much that will set you behind. There are always expenses associated with it like buying new furniture and appliances that may not be worth hauling there, and any fees related to the move etc. I find it crazy how some people are so easily willing to uproot everything they've worked for just for a job. I think of all the work I've put into my house it would take a lot for me to move, it would need to be because I want to move to a better location, not because of a job.

This means more competition. Also, in AT&T this means a lot more people to surplus.

Go to the new place, ignore all considerations, and set fire to everything in your wake.

That's been my strategy in life so far.

Short of more information, I would STRONGLY caution you against a place that is forcing you to make a decision quickly. That is a massive red flag. The right position is not on a time deadline in almost every scenario. This is a very common pressure tactic, don't play into that.

Along with what everyone else said, depends on location too IMO. There isn’t a job or amount of money in the world that could get me to move to Georgia or some other hellscape.

Might I suggest in the future adding in crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women?

I lived in Northern California over thirty years ago. It was great, but even then the cost of living sucked. I would never go back unless my salary was double what it is now. I do quite well actually, but given the current state of my career and age, I can make that claim. Even when it was not, this was not happening. I started my career there so everything was up back then. If it was not at the beginning, I would have not done it.

I'm not sure where you're moving from, but my general feel is taking a job with lesser benefits just to move to California is absolutely not worth it. The business climate there is not great, and unless you're making a massive pivot and taking an early loss to get your foot in the door in a new industry, I wouldn't take it.

This coming from someone who just left California two years ago when given the chance at the company I was with. YMMV

Yea I wouldn't make the leap coming out here to CA. There is some great stuff here, but if my wife was up for it, we'd be out of here. I make relatively good money for where I'm at, and my commute is 70 miles roundtrip with almost zero traffic, but the taxes here are just insane. And it is not business friendly. I work on land use entitlements for a living and some of the state laws and regulations I have to implement are deal killers for 50% of the folks who want to start a business in our local jurisdiction.

My current job is now changing my current job role to something that may not align with my goals. A promotional opportunity with another department has re-opened at the current organization. I would be getting in the front door by taking the new job with the other organization.

My employer used the pandemic as fog to hide another surplus. Then he cycle time for the surplus went from 90-days to 4 weeks. I would imagine other seedy businesses to use the pandemic as an opportunity to do the same.
