Sudden, inexplicable rise in CPU temperature??

I've used a Duron CPU on a K7T Turbo motherboard for about two months. I haven't used it at all during the last two weeks.
When I began using it again yesterday, I noticed that the CPU temperature (full load) as reported in the BIOS is 7-9 celcius higher than before. The ambient temperature did not change at all. Can anyone suggest what could be wrong?

I've got a couple related questions:

What's a normal running temperature for an Athlon 1.3GHz?
How hot can an Athlon get without risk of damage?

Thanks for the info guys.

I used arctic silver (I didn't change the setup at all).

Although my room is hotter than before, the case ambient temperature has not changed dramatically (~2 degrees).

Although not usually necessary, you could try reapplying the arctic silver.

I know that with some generic paste I first used for my t-bird it worked fine for a while, then went on a vacation where the CPU was off for over a week and when I had returned the temps were higher. Upon inspecting the application it was drying out in many spots.

I've only reapplied my AS once but that was because I changed from unlocking L1s with a pencil to conductive pen, so I just reapplied it anyway.

Same thing happened to me!

No change to the setup WHATSOEVER, ambient/case temps the same, the full CPU load score just "went up". I reinstalled the heatsink and the AS2 and it didn't make any difference. It still puzzles me now, but mine only want up 3-4C.

Its a thermal grease used to apply between the CPU core and the HSF. Its basically the best when it comes to how well it conducts the heat. It is a bit pricy though.

it is compound you put between your heatsink and processor. it conducts the heat to the heatsink from the processor faster than normal silicon crap. its a winner when it comes to cooling, usually..unless you apply it wrong =)

A cooling solution's efficiency is basically expressed as temperature rise above ambient. Thus when the room temperature increases 5 degrees, the CPU temperature will increase 5 degrees. (It's like a floating boat; as the water goes up or down, so does the boat.)

Also check the heatsink for dust accumulation. Often blowing the dust off of the heatsink will drop the temperatures a surprising amount.
