Suffering cat under house; what to do?

My brother told me yesterday there's an unfamiliar cat under the house, crying like it needs help. I was gone all day, driving out of state. I heard it still crying when I got back after midnight. Climbing under the house, I see it's unable to move its hind legs. It was probably hit by a car and paralyzed, then managed to drag itself under the house. It hisses and crawls away from me when I approach. I think it might go to a place where it's unreachable. It didn't touch the food + water my brother had put down there hours earlier. Probably couldn't muster the strength/will to crawl back to it after it tried to crawl away from my brother.

It's a holiday and Animal Control is closed. I called the emergency / on-call number and they said they only come out in cases involving a person being attacked or bitten.

I have to go to work, but I don't want to leave it suffering.

Damn.

If it is in that much pain it is probably better to put it out of its misery. I suggest a block of dry ice and water and just push it nearby the cat. Cheap and effective.

Most grocery stores sell dry ice. Just ask at the deli. You pay by the pound. I only know this because I had to purchase some when I transported fish I caught in CA back home to MD.

If you can get one of those loop poles around its torso, drag it out, and bring it to the urgent care in a box, they'll... you know.

You might need to call animal control. Those loop pole things are hard to find.

Of course if it were under my brother's house, it'd already have a 22LR round through its noggin. For the same reasons.

You need one of those scanner thingies. I'd take the body to a vet and see if they can check it out, notify the owner if there's a chip, and dispose of the body.

The carbon dioxide from the dry ice sits low to the ground. If the cat is in an enclosed space it will die relatively peacefully. Just don't sit in the same enclosed space with it. Get a big bowl of water, a pound of dry ice, put the bowl near it, plop in the ice, move away, and check back 15 minutes later or so. Should be done by then. Pretty much any grocery store sells dry ice by the pound. Usually like a couple of bucks per pound. Pound is pretty big and doubt you'll need that much. If you do get a pound you can have fun with it doing other things like dropping it into coworkers coffee and running!

Probably not. I've brought injured strays to a local animal rescue, and wasn't charged. Although they do solicit donations (and I've made donations.)

just bring it to the responsible organization for rescuing animals so you don't risk having to pay for a vet. They can check the RFID if they are the guys who get the stray dogs.

Oh bullshit. He got back Sunday after midnight and it died Monday morning, after he tried to get it out of there. It's a shame and sad, but your post is so much crap.
