Suggest a chat/IM program or service that doesn't require Flash or Active X

I miss chatting with my buddy during the work day and IT has locked down their systems even more. He doesn't have Flash or ActiveX support. Any thoughts on a program or online service that doesn't need either of those? Maybe something that can run from a flash drive?

Miranda? It's a multi-protocol IM tool that supports ICQ, AIM, whatever-the-other-ones-are. Very small memory footprint.

If you can afford to buy SanDisk Cruzer Micro usb flash it comes with free basic trillian that you can install into usb flash also some nice small apps built in there too.

Well then maybe they have everything turned off. He told me the error he got was that ActiveX was blocked.

I say stop looking for ways to circumvent policy. The policy was put in place to prevent certain activities. If you can find another way to do those activities it doesn't make those activities OK again.

If your place of work is anything like mine, you're using their keyboard and mouse to interact with their computer to communicate over their network. I think you probably shouldn't participate in activities they don't approve of while on the clock and using their equipment.

Personally, I use my phone to circumvent policy. It's not their equipment and it doesn't use their network although I am using it on company time which doesn't necessarily impact my productivity if I'm waiting for a server to reboot before I can log into it again.
