Suggest a degreaser(for kitchen)

Throw your pans away and go back to the thrift store where you purchased your other pans and buy more!!

Thats a waste of money. Suggest a more efficient method. Are there any harsh chemicals I can use to attack the nasty grease?

Oven cleaner will work. Stinky, but will work. I use it to clean off greasy car parts!

I'll look into it. Its a very thick greasy layer. I like lard I hope the chemicals can melt through the layer like butter

Warm them up a little first, then the oven cleaner will cut through the grease easier. Not hot, just warm.

I wouldnt use oven cleaner and kitchen chemicals on pots you intend to eat from. And WTF...what kind of layer of grease do you have built up that regular soap cannot take care of? Do you wash your pots once every 2 years?

More practical applications of chemistry class

plant or animal fats - use ammonia or sodium hydroxide
crude oil - use an organic solvent (toluene, acetone, ether)


The interesting thing about animal fat is that it can be turned into soap by breaking down the triglycerides with a strong base. Sodium hydroxide works great and is used in many industrial cleaners. Ammonia is even better because ammonium compounds are more soluble in water when compared to sodium compounds, but people try to avoid ammonia because the fumes really bother some people.

Do NOT soak your pots or pans in ammonia. A lot of people don't know this, but ammonia slowly dissolves metal.

Seriously, just use some Dawn, soak it in the sink for a while, apply elbow grease, rinse, repeat...
