Canon Powershot A- series (several to choose from) I own A-20 (old model) excellent picture quality, durable, good user opinions.
check www.dpreview.com, also if you shop www.amazon.com ,there are users opinions as well. You may need to specify what are you looking for in a camera (zoom, size ,MP, brand, are you going to print, etc) I just ordered me Sony DSC-U30 , a pretty hot product , very small (tiny) camera..

We need a digital camera forum! This question gets asked like twice per day!!!

It's a very simple process:

1) Select budget.
2) Go to this page and select the camera(s) that closely match the features/price you want.
3) Go here to find the best deal on that camera.

I would suggest the Canon PowerShot S45 for $348.

Edit: Canon really does make the best cameras, but if you have to look at other brands, look at Nikon, Sony, Fuji, and Olympus, in that order. Don't bother with other brands.

Another great review source is DCResource

Around that price range you'll find a Canon s400.

I have the a70 and i'm very happy with it.

There are many others. Check out the above link and review the various Canon models and then check out the direct competitor review links at the bottom. You'll find the usual suspects of good manufacturers like Nikon, Minolta and so forth.

I just bought a Pentax Optio S4, 4MP 3x zoom, smaller than the S400 (which was my 2nd choice) and fits in an Altoid tin can

A80 has a swivel LCD and uses AA batteries.

S400 is far more compact and uses a special battery (longer lasting but more expensive).

I personally like the compactness, take-it-anywhere ability of the S400 and would buy that one. It's slick!

Ok, I'm torn! The Canon A80 and the S400 are the same price. Which one would you guys get?

I prefer the Canon A80 since has more control options & swivel LCD back screen etc,the S400 is ideal if you want a smaller camera.

Minolta Dimage Xt

from dc resource

Generally good photo quality with accurate color, no purple fringing
Even smaller body, with same unique 3X zoom lens
Fast startup, shot-to-shot speeds
Improved movie mode: record until card is full, with sound
Much more sturdy door over memory card/battery compartment
Optional underwater case
TIFF mode
Can be used for videoconferencing (Windows only)

Well, while I haven't used a Fuji myslef, from overall impressions I don't think I'd rate them higher than Olympus .

Fuji and Olympus are about even in my mind. But since I am a Canon fanboi, it really doesn't matter.

Hehe... gets even harder if you are looking for a digital camera with 10x or more optical zoom, that`ll leave out all the Canon cameras and just leave certain models from Olympus (C-740, C-750),Minolta Z1,Fuji S5000,Kodak DX6490,Toshiba PDR-M700, Panasonic( DMC-FZ1/FZ10) in the ball game .

To make your decision even harder, also consider the Canon S45 for $348!
I'd go with the A80 because:

1) It has a better lens cover. (Those slide to the side things a F'in annouying)
2) It uses normal batteries. (that don't have to be charged in the camera or a special charger).
3) It has a much better mounting system for tele/wide lenses (I couldn't thoroughly read all 3 reviews but the A80 uses the same bayonet system as the A70 does....not some F'd up screw on system that you can cross thread or mount unevenly, I'm not even sure the S400 or S45 can use additional tele/wide lenses. It wasn't obvious like it was in the A70/80 review(s)).

Smart call
Read about image quality/ sharpness/ lens and Olympus beats Fuji hands down. I've had 3 different Fujis and will never buy one again had more than that of Olympus and currently have a Cannon and I'd Say Cannon and Olympus are much closer in Quality over $300 than Fuji's Now at $under $199 Olympus is not as good but still better than Fuji's Heck I never had a fuji up to the $500 at the time 4900Z that took sharp well lit indoor photos. On the other hand Oly 3040 and 4040 I had after the Fuji 4900 crushed it in almost all aspects.

I have a Cannon A60 and have had S230 and S330 and they were all nice But the Ax0 cameras are great. For $400 get something with a bigger lens and some optical zoom.

Also I have a friend with a Minolta Z1 only $324 runs on AA's which are cheap and last a long time and his pictures so far look good and a ton of Optical ZOOM.

also stay away from Toshiba and panasonic and HP quality/durability issues... they shouldn't even make cameras! And Kodaks are for Kids! although that new one with the 2.2 inch screen looks nice.

in the battery issue i think s- series camera uses rechargable batteries; so i don't have to buy battery anymore. don't you think its helpful?

this will be my first digital camera......
so shich one should i get ??(though i am a beginner i would like to have more options in my camera!)

i will buy the camera from italy (i am going next week).
can you guys tell the approx. price of these three models in italy?

Another vote for Olympus, although I'd go for one of their new Stylus digicams. I take my camera camping, hiking, fishing, - all kinds of places, and not always under the best conditions. My current Olympus (D510-Z) hasn't let me down yet, and it's an excellent camera - but I'd still feel a little better with a camera designed with this kind of stuff in mind. The Stylus cameras have metal bodies and o-rings around places that might let water in. Not that I'm going to take it scuba diving or anything but I have come really close to dunking my camera more than once (forutnately, all I did was splash it). And it usually rains when I'm out, too.

The S series does have a rechargeable battery but it either has to be charged in the camera (meaning you can't be using it while it's plug'd in to the wall) or with a special charger (if you have a camera that uses AA or AAA then you can get rechargables for your remotes, your wireless mouse, etc, etc....).
