Suggest a mid-workout snack

Tomorrow I'm attending a 3-hour blunt weapon defense seminar that my Krav Maga instructor is doing. It was suggested that I bring a snack. Normally I eat a banana about a half hour before my normal 1-hour class and that's enough to give me energy for the whole class, but I don't think it's enough for a 3-hour class.

Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe another banana half way through? Protein bar? Nothing at all?

I normally don't eat right before or during a workout, but I've done okay with fresh whole juice lately - either oranges or dates. Just blend them whole (no skin) with some water - pulpy, but you get the fiber & sugar hit in an easy-to-drink liquid form.

When I go on long hikes I like those power bar gel packs. I am not sure if they are still around.

I ended up eating a bowl of oatmeal (because I didn't have bananas) an hour or so before the seminar, two 16 oz. bottles of water during, and one of the little bottles of Gatorade after.

I was out of energy by the end of the seminar and started to get sloppy. If it was a 4-hour seminar I'd have been in trouble.

I wouldn't suggest Gatorade myself. It is pretty heavy and you don't need any of the stuff in it. Jeff, your 3 hour workout isn't going to deplete you of stuff to the point you need to actually take in nutrients. I know this because you're not a professional athlete doing professional things. If you were saying something like "I've got a game against Real Madrid this weekend" or something like that, I'd suggest Gatorade.

If you have to eat, a power bar is probably your best bet. I'd probably avoid those myself (as I dislike sweet stuff and those always have tons of sugar, at least, they taste like they do) and go with either a banana or a couple pickles.


Also, don't drink a Redbull. I made the mistake of drinking a Redbull before some physical activity and felt just terrible after. It was only a 1.5 mile run, but it was 5AM and I needed a pick me up for it.

For my 1-hour normal classes, I agree with you. For a 3-hour seminar... I'd like to invite you to attend one and then see if you'd like to revise your statement.

What? Greater than 2 hours of continuous/intense exercise, and you need to be taking in some sort of carb solution (e.g. Gatorade...not sure how that is heavy. It actually has a really good carb/fluid ratio).
