Fargo
Bad (or Badder) Santa
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
Thank You for Smoking
Sideways
Very Bad Things
Running With Scissors
Requiem for a Dream
ah dark films
dont forget in the company of men

the assissination of jesse james
enchanted
chicago
away from her
my fair lady
fiddler on the roof
soylent green
malena
the wild parrots of telegraph hill

one hour photo
lolita
top gun-for the cheese
the dreamers-eva green
2 days in the valley-teri hatcher and charlize theron
kids
gia

serendipity
the center of the world
dirty pretty things

pumping iron-arny
dog day afternoon
Cinema Paradiso
Memento
lock stock and two smoking barrels
cube

Among the bold, which ones do you recognize that are legitimately good. And Dog Day Afternoon is a movie that I NEED to see, can't believe I haven't gotten around to it.

heh, well away from her is a film about a man whos wife has Alzheimer's. so it depends if you want to watch that kind of thing. the dreamers was not that good, but eva green is ridiculously hot in it. gia isn't that good, i tossed it in because its early angelina jolie with lots of skin. 2 days in the valley is decent, mostly for charlize theron, but its better than the other skin films mentioned. kids is just f*cked up. center of the world and dirty pretty things are good dark films as well. Malena and cinema paradiso are from the same director, both are good though paradiso is generally regarded as superior, though malena has sweet sweet monica belluci. parrots is good, not quite as good as king of kong, but still worth seeing.

Wicker Park was ok. I felt like the story was 1 and a half plot twists too many, at the end I just wanted the movie to finish up alraedy. It would have been a bit better of harnett's character wasn't technically cheating on his girlfriend of the time, kind of makes him a douchebag. Acting was ok all around. I think the movie could have been a lot better with a more streamlined script and stronger actors. Diane Kruger is pretty hot though

Just some good ole stuff of the top of my head....

Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are fucking hilarious. House of the Flying Daggers was very good also. I need to rewatch it sometime soon.

I've found that I've been watching a lot of foreign films as of late simply because I'm running out of American movies to watch.

Speaking of foreign films, I'm assuming you've seen Hero and Infernal Affairs right?

Yup, seen em both! However, I am always looking for new films. Any ideas?

I just finished watching The 13th Floor based on a recommendation in this thread. I thought it was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised with the plot twist.

hmm... there's always oldies from asia like Farewell my concubine, raise the red lantern, red sorghum, Eat Drink Man Woman, Yi Yi...

I really liked The Wind that shakes the Barley, an irish film. You'll still need subtitles though, the irish accent is pretty thick

I've got The Wind That Shakes the Barley coming tomorrow from netflix. It sounds good.

watched it recently

If you don't mind subtitles, check out The Orphanage. It's a Spanish film by Guillermo Del Toro but well worth the effort.
Another vote for The Orphanage.

Is this more akin to Pan's or closer to horror

based on what I've read, suspense/horror. but good.

It's not that BS that passes as horror these days. It's classicly good, and sounds better than Pan's, based on the critics.

I feel the same about Josh's character. You end up feeling bad for his fiance and Matthew Lillard's character. Nevertheless, I like it very much. And yes, Diane Kruger is damn fine. The movie made a lot more sense after a second viewing.

I really like Josh Hartnett. He is excellent in every flick I've seen him in (though the movies themselves may not be good); Wicker Park, 30 Days of Night, Lucky Number Slevin, The Black Dahlia (sucked), etc.

I think he's a fine actor, just doesn't have a lot of range.

he was terrible in Resurrecting the Champ. Though, that could simply be that he was horribly mis-cast for that role. So, like you said...no range.

meh, i didn't like wind that shakes the barely. don't care much for its politics of course but that was the least of its problems. its a one sided cartoon of history.

as for flying daggers, it was too much fluff, no content. i thought hero was better. i'd suggest old boy over daggers.

Ulee's Gold
A Good Year

Any movie directed by Sydney Pollack as a tribute to him. I liked the guy.
