Suggest a quiet keyboard

Sort of like the ones on laptops, but I want one that's also good for gaming. The laptop versions don't seem to provide a lot of tactile feedback. And I want it wired. Thanks.

I use that wired Apple keyboard. Not sure what "good for gaming" means. It's held up pretty well over the 2 years or so that I've had it. WASD keys still feel the same as the rest of them.

By good for gaming, I assume you mean tactile feedback and n-key rollover. The only ones I know that have those traits are some versions of mechanical switches (cherry brown-axis, or alps equivalents) and they aren't exactly quiet. I mean they are not obnoxiously loud like buckling springs, but they make themselves heard compared to those laptop ones.

Spoooon, not everyone plays FPS and FPS only. for fighting games and rhythm games, keyboards make a world of difference. trust me.

tbh, I don't think logitech's classic 200 is too bad for gaming. laptop style keys as you mention though. If gaming is the priority over quietness, I would suggest you pick up a filco tenkeyless majestouch like I did

Ultra short travel probably means scissor-switch based I am guessing. Should be quite but no tactileness there to be had. It's up to him to decide what matters more I reckon.

Tactile is more important. The one he linked seems too thin and the key presses will probably be too soft; you can barely tell when you press it.

just get this one and forget the rest, you won't regret it!

looks gorgeous, feels perfect, gives me more room to fit my ginormous everglide destrukt

EDIT oh yeah, these are supposed to be the holy grail of keyboards but look at that price, yikes!

das series seem to be a bit more affordable with the same switches inside, could be a good choice as well.

I am fond of their mouse offerings, not so much of the keyboards. Tried pushing keys in at the local fry's, definitely does not sport mechanical switches.

Using the Tarantula is definitely an interesting experience. During general use- word processing, browsing the internet, and so on- the keyboard works well enough, but is nothing special. The layout is very much like that of Logitech’s S 510 though it lacks some of Logitech’s refinement. The action of the main set of keys is responsive, but with the indistinct down stroke of a membrane keyboard. The keystroke is relatively short

The Razer Tarantula has an Optimized Hyperresponse technology membrane for reducing keystroke latency and maximizing control response
gotta love their colorful lingo, they've been doing this on their mice too... decent enough products but their hyping of their own products is outrageous a membrane keyboard is a membrane keyboard after all...

Hence the "not sure what "good for gaming" means" comment.

The Majestouch is out of my price range. The Razers look nice, but holy crap are they glossy. Do these ever go on sale?

last I remember seeing them go on sale was BB clearance for $20ish. BB deals are always YMMV and that was some time ago...

I have the Logitech 920 Illuminated keyboard. The keys are very much like a laptop actually. I really like this keyboard and the clear plastic border matches my Samsung S260HD monitor. It is expensive but worth every penny IMO.

You should check Dell's 'quiet keyboard'.
it's actually generic keyboard that comes with their PCs. It is extremely quiet. clicking sound is definitely gone... and all you hear is the 'thump' when you strike the key and very quiet spring release noise....

I came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMO7wuDqSAc

That g230 is ultra quiet, but I can't find it anywhere. The Razers from other videos seem pretty noisy, so I guess the Logitech Illuminated is the next best thing. I did read up about the key blocking issues; hope it won't affect me.

What key blocking issues? I've never had that and I am using the Illuminated for more than a year now. It's the type of keyboard that you like to type on, you will forget about copy-paste and just go typing
Buy it and don't look back, I've been using most of the higher grade gaming keyboards, this one kills them all.
I wanted to get the new G19 and bought this Illuminated as a simple keyboard to type on before I could get the G19; I no longer want the G19, unless they come up with a G19 with the Illuminated keys (perfect stroke or whatever they call it). It's that good.

Have you used any higher grade keyboards with brown-axis cherries in them? I just have hard time believing anyone would prefer the feel of membrane keyboards.

I wasn't aware of the fact that there are gaming keyboards with cherry brown-axis. I thought that was a typing keyboard, not a gaming one.
By gaming I mean simple, easy to use, not very expensive so you can abuse it when you loose. Back-lighting is also something I want in a gaming keyboard, but not blue, red, green... white will do, looks much better, cleaner and more serious.
Anyway, konakona, try the Illuminated, it might not be as good for typing as a scissor type keyboard, but it's 80% or more.
