Hi, till now I was using Kaspersky Antivirus 2015 and I felt that it made my system slow. It was scanning every file that I was opening . It bothered me , hence I decided to go for an alternative. I am using Windows 7 . And I game on this PC. Therefore, kindly suggest me a good antivirus that will not give false positives and which will also give good protection from the hackers .

Also, btw is windows firewall good or should I use the firewall that comes up with the security ? I have my windows updates stopped so I dont think windows firewall will do any good ?

Anyways suggest me a good smooth security and I am gonna buy that .

Thanks in advance.

I use Bitdefender Free. It's cloud based and there will be no pop up nags or any of that. It's very light weight. Some users have reported false positives, but I never encountered that. If you use hacks or certain mods in gaming then Bitdefender Free may prevent them from working. Bitdefender Free will also throw up a page stopping you from going to an infected site. I turn off Auto scan and just leave the virus shield on.

In addition I use Sandboxie for my browser, but it has to be configured.

As far as a firewall, Comodo Firewall is pretty good. However it has stopped my Alcohol 120% virtual drive from working do to the defense shield. The earlier version allowed you to opt out of installing the defense shield. I haven't installed Comodo in a while to see if it exhibits the same problem with my virtual drive or not.

You know I used to be a fan of the free Microsoft Security Essentials (win 7), I think they call it Defender now on Win8. I used to swear up and down it was just as good if not better than any of the paid AV programs. My dad kept getting viruses, kept trainwrecking his systems and so did my father in law. And I always had to fix it. Generally it was malware, or they would get stupid fake spam emails and they would be stupid enough to go and click a link. God. Anyhow I got tired of that.

What I recently purchased is a "10 pack" of Norton Security 2015 with backup. It’s normally I think $75 but it was on sale for $10 off. BTW you can get 1 license, 5, 10 etc. I installed it on all their systems, my system, even has a Mac version if you need etc. Anyhow, now that it's installed on my own computer I have NOT even seen, heard, felt a PEEP out of it. It runs in the background... never bothers me unless it actually finds something, which it did. Otherwise it's silent and I have not noticed ANYTHING while playing games. Best thing so far is that both my parents and the in-laws thus far... knock on wood... have also been quiet LOL. It integrates with their Outlook and blocks they spam. Integrates addons for their Firefox or Chrome etc for safe surfing etc. Most people would not need that stuff, we would use common sense but honestly I am impressed now, not only for how it holds your hand but also how it leaves you alone when you don’t need it. Again this is my opinion... I am sure many will tell you of their own great experience with other products.

Here is the link for the product. Again you might find it cheaper from a retailer:
https://ca.norton.com/products
Canadain BTW… just switch to the US or UK etc.

If you don’t need the backup, you can save some more.

+1 on Norton Security, I have tried every AV/Security Suite out there and hav a license for them all. Norton Security is the only one that doesn't have bugs or slows down my system nor do I have to deal with any stupid false positives.

The best thing is, you purchase 1 license, and can use that same license on upto 5 devices (mobile or computers) and their online chat tech support is superb! if you have any trouble (or in this case your father, the Norton Tech will login to his system and help him live)

The latest few years of Norton have been pretty good. I tried out AVG on a friend's machine a few weeks ago and it did a good job. The main thing that concerns me about your post is this...

I have my windows updates stopped so I dont think windows firewall will do any good

1. Most Windows Updates are for security vulnerabilities. So the best AV in the world may not help you if well-know security holes on the OS are left open.
2. A firewall does not need constant updates, unless you get one that likes to rate programs, and block those it doesn't recognize. In my opinion, those are a pain. But it really depends on whether or not you are the type of person that likes to download anything and everything that looks "interesting."

true, Windows security updates are a MUST otherwise one might as well run with no AV since he has many doors / vulnerabilities open

On a side note, Norton Security is an Antivirus + Firewall and best thing it doesn't bother me about every freakin' connection attempt and come in my way. it just works silently and only notifies you if something bad is trying to connect.

I am glad it is working for you. I remember that being one of the big selling points of ZoneAlarm, but that program ended up taking internet speeds to a crawl.

I had Norton Security for a long time but found it clunky and definitely had false positives. Switched to Avast and much happier now.

it's what works for you best.....

Avast becamse really heavy (for me) and their interface is Garbage, like a little child who wanted to draw some cartoony tiles designed it, but to each their own.

Also, avast's portection level hasn't been great lately and if you remember 2 months ago avast! kept silently deleting Firefox add-ons from the browser, but anyway, glad it works for you

Check kaspersky's settings/options and see if you can configure what it scans. Some av's can be setup to scan only when writing to disk or when files are a certain type or size. Some even have a game mode that you can turn on before gaming. Some av's scan on boot which slows your bootup time but usually it can disabled. Diving into the settings is not for your average user or your high risk users so do so at your own risk.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best solution, as far as I know Plus it is also free. I myself have tried many solutions but the worst it that they make the PC slow especially they increase the boot times upto 5x.

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.6 Final

no, one might as well run with no AV rather than using that useless junk

Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows Defender on Windows 8) was once on top. Over the years, its slid in the test results, but Microsoft argued the tests werent meaningful. Now, Microsoft is advising Windows users to use a third-party antivirus instead.

This revelation comes to us from an interview Microsoft gave. Microsofts official website still bills MSE as offering comprehensive malware protection without any hint that they no longer recommend using it. Microsoft is not communicating well with its users.

Goodbye Microsoft Security Essentials: Microsoft Now Recommends You Use a Third-Party Antivirus

I've been using Avast without any issues, it has the gaming mode you can activate which seems to work decently. We have Kaspersky at work installed on five thousand PC's. Overall it does a good job of preventing viruses but not so much the malware/adware type stuff.

this. we have the business version of kaspersky and it is *great*
i tweaked a few settings on the policies and nobody complains about how it operates. scans run from noon - 1pm and then stop, quick scans in the morning are not noticeable. i disabled the vulnerability scan, it was a resource hog and not worth running, imo.

The best option is common sense.

I never used a third party antivirus, with Windows 7 I used MSE and my PC never got 1 virus or malware.

With Windows 8 it comes integrated and it's called Windows Defender, no virus so far.

As of how to deal with people without common sense, I told my dad/relatives to not open mails if the sender is not very well known, do not click any links in emails if the sender is not very well known, do not download or install anything without asking someone first including plugins update.

If these rules aren't followed I will not repair their PC, and I follow this rules my self.

You can use the Windows privileges to sandbox users, aka administrator vs limited user.

I agree with all of your post except for this part. If it is family, I will do it. They're family. If it is others, they pay. If they want to keep paying, I will continue to remove the Malware.

Let me jump on the Bit Defender band wagon! Once I installed Bit Defender on my wife`s laptop I suddenly had no problems and she had no problems with her machine! No false positives and the cool thing is it actually works!!

Of course I will repair their PC, is just that it get's frustrating that always they are infecting their systems I just told them that so they take it seriously.

Webroot Internet Security

The only downside I've seen so far is that it is flagging some KLR files from VS 2015 Preview, but it's an alpha-stage program.
