I started Boardwalk Empire last night. Going to give it a shot for at least 1 season.

Just finished Boardwalk Empire today. Enjoyed it overall, definitely had some slow points and I thought the flashbacks that come late in the series would have worked better earlier in the series. Was very much Sopranos set in the early 1900's IMO but still a good show. Wasn't sure how they were going to end it but I'm okay with how it did end.

Also finished Walking Dead through season 5. Most episodes were very good but such a frustrating show to watch. The stupid things they made the characters do in an effort to continue the story line just drove me nuts.

Now I can't watch season 6 as it's not available for streaming from Netflix or Amazon and Comcast and AMC strangely only have the 2nd half of season 6.

The final 8 episodes of that series are to this day the best consecutive 8 episodes I've seen in my life.

I thought season 4 outdid the final 8 in every way. Walt vs Gus was riveting, TV at its absolute finest.

And I think BB holds up brilliantly. Yes, you lose some of the edge-of-your-seat excitement knowing how they're getting out of whatever near-death experience they're having that week, but the writing and acting is so good it just doesn't matter. You catch things on the 2nd time through that you missed on the first, bits of foreshadowing just leave you in awe.

Loving Silicon Valley on HBO.

Absolutely excellent show.

I still need to catch up on Silicon Valley myself, we haven't watched it this season.

The Americans is very good, and current in production if you've never watched it.

There are a lot of basically dead series out there, BB, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, etc if you have not watched them.

The Good Wife was always good also, and just ended it's run.

If the OP liked Nikita, check out Alias with Jennifer Garner. Also if you liked The Wire then you should check out Homicide: Life on the Streets. Very good cop show.

I think both Vampire Diaries and The Originals are decent shows. The acting can be annoying at times but once you get used to it, it starts to feel "normal." As a general rule there's no real tension as to the main characters but they do get you to care about the ancillary characters and use them for that purpose. Some of the story lines are pretty imaginative but you have to accept you're watching something that is for the most part only enjoyed by teen and tween girls.

Three I haven't seen mentioned:

Veep -- Comes on either right before or after Silicon Valley. It's lol hilarious. Those who find Julia Louis-Dreyfus annoying will be absolutely surprised. The raunch factor in the dialog is amazing! I dare you to try just one episode and not burst out laughing multiple times.

Ray Donovan
-- Gritty and excellent.

Major Crimes -- One of the very best "Second Tier" series out there.

Unfortunately "Major Crimes" should be renamed "The Rusty Show".

I'm sensing some annoyance.

I actually admire "The Rusty Show" as a fairly well fleshed-out subplot arc on a basic cable show.

Didn't read every entry in this thread, so apologies if it's already been suggested, but Happy Valley on Netflix is one of the best things I've seen since The Wire. Just started River (also on Netflix) and it is showing promise.

I just downloaded Happy Valley and watched the first 15 minutes of the first episode. Looks pretty good, but damn, I could only make out about 3/4 of the dialog.

I may get my nerd card revoked, but I've never watched Buffy. Like even one episode. I did see the movie though.

Maybe I'll get around to it if I'm ever homebound for a couple months and I can blow through it on Netflix.

Looks good, let us know what you think after you've finished.

https://www.netflix.com/title/70260350

We could barely get past the first episode of River. As much as I like Stelen Skaaaarsgaaaeoaard, the show was just way too brooding, dark, and depressing to sustain more episodes for us. And not in a brooding and dark is awesome! True Detective kinda way, but in a brooding and dark and I am just sad and want to kill myself kinda way. Also lots of mumbling.

We are currently hooked on Rectify, because of your's and others recommendations in various threads here. Absolutely brilliant and shamefully, nay criminally overlooked series.

Veep is completely fantastic. Been watching since day 1. People find JLD annoying? I find here completely sexy/hot. Not to mention one of the (very few) funny women out there.

JLD is amazing. One of the best comedic actors around, regardless of gender.

That being said, this season of Veep so far feels much weaker compared to the previous seasons. It's already halfway through.

It is weaker this season than previous -- agreed. Not sure why, maybe it has run it's course?

I only mentioned "female" as I don't find many female comediennes very funny. But JLD is just hilarious. I watch old Seinfelds nearly every day and she just steals every single scene. In Veep she is just as flawless in her timing and delivery. Also, did I mention incredibly sexy for 55 years old?
