My neighbor in that situation (BS in Bio, used to work for a big Pharmaceutical lab) went thru this - temp work, trying to find lab work, child care, waitressing, telemarketing, sub. teaching etc.

She found out that the best paying, best suited gig for her is house cleaning.

The other one she liked was merchandising - you know, being a rep for a potato chip co and going around to stores and stocking, upselling, etc. But it didn't pay as well as cleaning.

One of my other neighbor wives does limo driving. Picks up executives at Newark airport or Teterboro and drives them to meetings and then back to the airport. Seems to pay decently after tips. She's one of those people in the airport with the sign.

What part of the country are you in? My company is currently looking to hire a full time lab assisstant for nights, and a part time filing postition, but her degree in biology would be helpful, since we are a diagnostic lab. Let me know, if you are in Mass. The company is located in Worcester, I can give you more info if you're interested. I know the lab assisstant job pays well enough, I'm not sure about the filing but I would guess it does.

Correct, looking for Western Suburbs of Chicago, around Aurora.

I've been granted a slight reprieve on the hour cutting and will only be out $$7,500 which is not insignificant considering my current obligations. That being said, the additional hours I'll be at home should allow me to watch the kids while my wife takes an accelerated nursing program at Loyola, she'd complete it in May '08 and they have a 100% hire rate...

If she's going nursing, why not a CNA job? Would provide great experience and exposure to the field before she started hitting her clinical rotations for school.

Or does she just want something "different" that isn't nursing?

Sorry the idea for the acceperated program came up when we realized that my reduced hours would enable me to watch the kids...

The program starting May '07 would be 40+ hours a week (they reccomend that you are not working). She currently does some babysitting and substitution in a pre-school that we attend and will continue to do that until she starts the program...
I think this idea is a winner.

...thoughts...

I know there are a couple of nurse spouses on here....

...maybe I should start a new thread... though, come to think of it, it's been done...

Not much she can do except for clerical jobs as suggested above. My sister is currently serving pizza at a pizza parlor for minimum wage with a master in biochem & 8 years of experience as a medical researcher.

Good luck.

Does she have any nunchuck skills? Computer hacking skills? Employers only want people with good skills.

Seriously.

Tutoring.

It's a bitch, but with a BS you make low $20s in a second, make $60/hr without blinking, and can go even higher depending on the demographic that you target....only problem is that you get paid by the hour, and each hour is GRUELING.

That said, for her, amybe part-time teaching or a grueling tutoring schedule would be nice.

Does she have any useful skills or just a degree?

See: She hasn't worked for the last ten years, she's been raising kids.

Of course she has usefull skills.

Raising kids isn't really a useful skill in the real world...unless you're in daycare or something like that.

Try to raise kids for a while

It is amazing how many useful skils one is forced to develop.

I am amazed that someone with your reputation would come up with such a gradeschool response

But you're learning basic skills that the general populous could no doubt tackle as well. Time management, handling unruly co-workers/bosses (kids), managing a schedule, multitasking. These are basic skills that are just considered REQUISITE for any job.

That doesn't make someone special. What I'm talking about is a specialized skill set. One can't just raise a few kids for 10 years then say, "Hey, I wanna be a computer programmer" if you haven't been exposed to that field or likewise say "Hey, I want to do DNA analysis or forensics."

It doesn't work that way, at least that's not the way I understand it. Raising kids is a tough job, don't get me wrong. But that doesn't give you a free pass to just any job once you decide to jump back into the market.

Do you realized there are degrees for child cares? Up to PhD I believed.

OP. Try to find a job in child care. Might not be what she wants but she sure got the skills set and experience.

My vote is lab work. Check around for small independent labs or big ones like LabCorp. Also, check with food manufacturing companies. Many will have labs in their processing plants as well as a corporate lab.

Her degree is Biology

Before I convinced her ot have unprotected sex and impregnated her with my offspring, she wanted to go to medical school. After kids she doesn't want to make that extreme a commitment, though her interest are still scientific and medical. She wants to be a nurse practitioner and may go for that after exp as an RN. We are being sort of kicked in the ass by the loss of some income, but it's not a bad thing, it encourages us to move forward.

I think we've got a good game plan with the accelerated nursing school.

Or kids attend a private Waldorf school which is where her substitute exp comes form and they would love her to become a teacher there, unfortunately the pay is far to low... though when I asked her if the pay were equal would she want to persue that she still leaned toward the nursing cert. working in the medical field is something she's always wanted to do....

I know her degree was in Bio. Since you saying there are not many useful skills in raising a few kids, I just disagreed and point out there is a whole branh of education on how to "raise kids"

As to OP wife, I am sure she could find a job as a helper in one of those child care center.

She is sweet and gentle. Really, everybody who meets her thinks she's the nicest person in the world. Natural born mother, really.
