well, ive been reading a bit about people overclocking these badboys and seen that the stock cooler just doesnt quite cut it like it used to for intel stuff... soooooo... what kinda cooler would you guys suggest to keep temps down?

I Have an Antec P180, yes oldschool, and i keep the fans on low and medium so its pretty quiet, id rather not have to hear a wind tunnel running all the time as this computer is in my bedroom...

the Scythe Ninja and Tuniq Tower both seem to be fairly well regarded but im not so sure as to how well they will do in my P180... i know the original Scythe Ninja was supposed to be the mack daddy in a P180 with the A64's but that was then and this is now.... so what will work good, be fairly quiet and fit inside of my P180 with a EVGA 780i board???

oh yeah, or would one of the huge arse Thermaltake deals do good?

I use a Tuniq on on of my builds and a lapped zalman 9700 on the other. The tuniq clearly outshines the zalman. A thermalright Ultra120extreme and the tuniq are the most widely regarded best of the lot for aircooling. There are a couple of new designs as well. Theres a new sigmatec that looks like a thermalright that sells for 25 bucks ish that may do a decent job as well. I havent seen any reviews of it though. Right now with the Tuniq available for 40ish shipped it to me is the best deal avail for top end air.

idk why but ive HATED how it looks, like it actually makes me sick to my stomach lol...

what type of fan would be recomended for a Tuniq Tower? also should i worry about cooling the mobo components? thats part of the reason ive been looking into a Big Typhoon VX...

I'd say a Tuniq Tower would be your best bet. I cannot say for sure if it'll fit in your case but, being as it fits in the P182 without issue and the CPU area is almost identical I don't forsee an issues. The fan that comes with the tuniq when connected to the motherboard header and temperature controlled should be nearly silent at idle and not much of even a whir with normal use. It will be audible under heavy load but, not obscene by any measure.

EDIT:
The big typhoon VX is a great heatsink and as you said, it does help cool motherboard components quite noicably but, if I'm not mistaken your NB cooler can take a fan. If I'm right, a dedicated fan for the chipset and a tower heatsink will outshine the big typhoon in both cpu and chipset cooling but, with two fans instead of just the fan on the big typhoon.

well ive been doing some googling and found that aparantly Tuniq likes to run the base of their coolers across a parkinglot before they ship them... and im FAR too lazy to lap the base of it so the Thermaltake seems to be the better choice... ive used their products in the past with good results... Volcano 3, Volcano 5+, Volcano 7+, GeForce4 Ti cooler and currently i have a 120mm BlueThunder casefan from them...

now i just need to find one for a reasonable price... i might could go talk to Xoxide since ive bought some parts for my mustang from their other site americanmuscle.com...

1) Thermalright =/= Thermaltake
2) Tuniq Tower quality control > Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme quality control

Tuniqs are usually cheaper than U120 extremes, and you have to buy a fan for the extreme too.

Yes on all counts. And for this guy, the tuniq is the way to go but, the TRUE, lapped, prepped and installed properly is a better performer.

i never said thermalright and thermaltake were the same...

the the tuniq QC is better than Thermalright then i dont want to see a ultra120.. every picture of a Tuniq Tower i have seen has shown what i consider to be completely unacceptable for a finished product...

hell im happy with how my Gigabyte 3dRocket cooler does on my A64... just wish my current ASRock mobo wasnt such a piece...

I think what aflac is trying to say is,

Tuniq would never let a sink this badly warped pass as OK for sale

current and past TRUE's have had rather severely warped bases. The finish is pretty nice but, they're warped.

im not even getting into them being warped.... im talkinga bout finish quality... if its warped the its a piece of trash completely in my opinion...

i guess im used to the automotive industry where if i part has terrible finish quality... people dont buy it...

Had some pretty good success using the Enzotech Extreme-X cooler on both a G0 Q6600 and a B3 Xeon 3210. Excellent finish on the base....adjustable fan speed....down blowing fan on a heatsink with 4 x 8mm heatpipes. If you're looking at the Typhoon VX, this is another one you really should consider.

The xigmatek or it's kingwin sister would out-perform the zalman, rather notably. Plus it has a replacable fan. Some of the Zalman fanboys here will say the fan is a moot point but, that depends a lot on the user and their expected system longevity. The zalman fans do las for a long time, I'm not going to start a debate about them again but it's definately something to keep in mind when making the decision.

But the warping aids in cooling says the TR reps

Save some money and space. Buy the Ultima - 90 (thermalright) the anandtech review clearly shows it performs withing just a few degrees of the huge and expensive TRUE or TUniq Tower. It costs less, and is smaller. It fits just fine in a p180

I got my Xigmatech in & installed yesterday.
I'm fairly pleased w/the results.
I'd been running a lapped Tuniq Tower & it kept my e6300 running @ 2.34 around 37c idle.
The Xigmatech is alot more quiet & is keeping it at or a degree or 2 lower. Once one figures out the trick to mounting, it isn't difficult at all to mount. I wouldn't hesitate taking it out right now & putting it back in without taking my motherboard out.
It fits fine in my P180...I was concerned it'd be a tad too tall.
Save yourself some money & pick one of these up!
