So why don't they get a real job instead of bitching about no tip? They are going to be making nearly minimum wage anyways.
Because they can make a lot more than the min if they're good, depending on the place. And who wants a real job? That implies being responsible.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but don't parties of 6 usually get auto-gratuity?

Just seems like the server didn't auto-add gratuity at 15% gambling that the customer will add 18% on their own. It even says on the ticket "Please feel free to increase or decrease the gratuity amount."

Problem not found.

This. Start at 20% and then they earn/lose from that point. If a business has a mandatory gratuity, then that's all they get no matter how good the service is.

Last night ate at an applebees for the first time in years. Server repeatedly forgot items and didn't bring some items that were even asked for twice. He ended up with a 15% tip. Table of 6, poor guy. It's not like the place was busy though.

See, this is you doing it wrong. 15% is what you pay for service, take away for poor service (like you had), and bump it up to 18% if you had the most outstanding meal ever. 15% is what they need to earn for a satisfactory service, so when you start at 20%, you screw over the rest of us. Before you know it, 20% will be the norm everywhere, and people will tip 25% commonly for good service and so on and so forth. I'd have tipped the guy 10% and explained why on the bill or to his face. Make him earn the tip like he is supposed to.

15% is what it has been for years and years and years. Stop trying to mess up a good thing.

Never seen 6, but commonly 8 or more around here.

So do you guys tip 15% on take out when there's a line for tip on the receipt?

I'll tip on take-out if the food was ready when they said it would be or offered me a drink while waiting if it isn't, but only one or two dollars. I almost never tip the full 15% on take-out.

Servers make like $2-4/hour before tips and ~$7-8 after tips.
If you can't afford 20%, don't go out to eat.

You aren't sticking it to the restaurant, you are sticking it to the server.

If the server sucks and is rude, give them 1%.

LMFAO not here in California. Servers make 8-12 an hour BEFORE tip and 20 to 30 an hour after tip. Servers are some of the MOST highly paid staff in a restaurant. The people who make the food actually make less then them.

It is sad really while the cooks who are making the food barely get buy, the servers are making middle class wages. The servers have also got laws into place that stop cooks from getting any tip money.

I can't remember now but I found a restaurant once that printed out a calculated tip values for 15%, 18%, and 20% at the bottom of the bill. I actually find this very helpful. I like it.

Yup here in Cali, servers make real good money. They get poor schmucks to tip them even with horrible service.

Plus no matter what state they are in, servers have to be paid minimum wage no matter what. It's illegal for them to get paid less. I don't know why people still fall for them getting paid crap. There's a reason why many people do it, they get paid well for basic customer service work.

You are wrong. Servers at my restaurant are paid $3.63/hr. We survive on tips. I make approximately $11-$13/hr on an average day... on a great day I can make upwards $18/hr. And many say that servers make more than the cooks/chefs etc, but they fail to realize that the VAST majority of servers are not full time. They are part-time.

lies.

by law they have to make MIN wage. I know a few waitress's (2 of my sister-in-laws do it) they make far more then $8 an hour both on avarage have said they make about $12 an hour. Sundays far more.

Wrong. Minimum wage is not required. I am a server. I know the business very well. See my previous post for how much I make. On top of that, I serve in a smallish town where tips are very hit or miss. My quarterly average tip% on CCs is currently 16.7%

Yes, I do. If we don't make minimum wage WITH tips, then that's what we're stuck with. Maybe it's different in other states, but not here. I've had days where my take home hourly wages were <$7/hr

I tip about 20% but lately along with the economy, many businesses have been cutting corners (less fresher food/premade appearance, tastes more rushed and sloppy) along with hiring nonchalant wait staff is getting me a bit peeved when the wait staff is not a convenience but a obstacle between getting my food and drinks faster than doing it myself. Its not looking too great for most restaurants that lack faithful regulars propping them up.

http://www.labor.mo.gov/DLS/MinimumWage/tipped.asp

Missouri Department of Labor said:
However, if the tipped employee does not make up the other half of the minimum wage in tips, the employer is required to pay the difference so that the tipped employee is paid $7.25 per hour.

I don't tip.

Because I don't go out to eat. We'll its down to once every couple months. I see no reason to pay taxes on food, tip someone to serve me (I'm perfectly capable of feeding myself), and pay the outrageous prices they want for such simple usually bland meals.
