Suggestion for gaming monitor

From what I thought I understood, Hz does not matter in the LCD world. It is only about response time. However I see newegg has this monitor that talks about 120 HZ and 5ms response time.

The question is, does that mean all 5ms response time monitors can be run at 120 hz and this monitor is just one of the few that is mentioning it or is there actually a difference in it that allows 120 hz to be set where other 5ms response time monitors can't?

There aren't a lot of 120Hz monitors. Most are 60Hz only. So, I guess that particular monitor is special.

I'm still confused about the whole 120Hz and 60Hz thing though. I originally thought 120Hz monitors were made so 24fps movies can be properly played (120 divides evenly into 24). So does 120Hz actually improve the speed at which the screen is updated (better for gaming)?

In CRT montiors 120 hz means the screen is updated at 120 FPS. It is a lot smoother then 60 hz which is only updated 60 FPS. I have been told many times (although now I'm beginning to think they are wrong) that in LCD the 60 hz was just there but had no reflection on the smoothness, only response time did. I have checked out a few reviews online now for this monitor and it seems as though the hz still does matter. Just because you have a 2ms response time on a 60 hz monitor does not mean it will look as smooth if you had 120 hz.

ah, I meant 120Hz for LCD monitors. I'm quite familiar with refresh rates for CRTs and the smoothness and whatnot, but I'm just not certain if 120Hz meant that LCDs will refresh that quickly.

Unless I'm mistaken, it seems like it should be much smoother. 120Hz means the screen refreshes about every 8.3 ms, faster than most TN panels' response times. But is this what really happens in 120Hz LCDs?

I'm trying to google "120Hz LCD," but seems like there's a lot of misconceptions about it or what it actually does. Like some LCD TVs would actually convert a 24Hz or 60HZ signal to 120Hz, rather than accept 120Hz signal (which is what I thought it would do).

I never rely on Newegg reviews for purchase decisions but some of the comments make very interesting reading regarding this issue.

At this point in time I guess I will stick with my CRT but it is nice to know that they are now making 120 HZ LCD's. Also good to know that in fact the 120 hz does make a big difference and that response time is not the same as hz.

I will def wait for the price to go down but it's good to know that gamers will not be screwed with the switch to LCDs.
