I have a 2500k system with 8 drives (gpu is powered via the cpu hd300) that I run 24/7. The antec 400 has started making a annoying racket and looking a newegg review this is not uncommon. Any suggestions for a very quiet very reliable psu ?

Are all 8 drives likely to be running simultaneously on average, or are the idle ones being allowed to spin down? I think if the former is more likely, I'd think of a chunkier PSU. Not by much though, and this is just a feeling (I've never run a system with that many drives connected).

Did the PSU have that many power connectors or are you using adapters?

Well 2 of the drives are optical and are rarely used; the other 6 are hd which never spin down - I'll rebuild the raid-1s in a few months and reduce the drive count to 4 (scrach disk, media disk, couple of raid 1 partitions)

The antec 400 had plenty of connectors; I don' tthink the drives used that much power. The problem is the fan is far from slient (and others on newegg complain of a similar sound I'm now hearing). Some psu that have been suggested include the kingwing absolute platinum 550 and seasonic platinum 660 (neither are fanless but are said to be very quiet). Smobilkat link just points to all the fanless models @ newegg but doesn't really qualitative access which of those psu are good and which are dogs.

My guess is the system uses less than 250watts; probably less than 200watts; though at boot up there might be a bit of drain when the drives first start up. Given that i'm using the cpu hd300 I'll probably update to haswell hd500 when linux drivers are updated (aug?); though a bit depends if microcenter runs a killer sale like they did on sandybridge. I *think* the iris version of hd500 is around 90watts and the other are lower power but I'm not 100% sure of the differences in gpu - for this system maybe the 25watt version is fine ?

I would recommend the Antec HCG from a quiet fan point of view, no complaints. Apart from a fanless PSU, the quietest PSU I've heard is a Corsair VX450 (discontinued). The HCGs as as quiet as that one.

Well since my current antec is a dud (with regards to fan longevity) I think I'll skip future antec psu.

FYI Rosewill Silent Night 500W fanless PSU is in stock on newegg and rings at $118 after all coupons and discounts. Not the greatest price, but lower than anything I've seen in a while.

I ordered one last night because the fan in my current power supply has annoying chirp.

Probably never; was a bit concern about boot drain (simply don't know peak watt usage of the disks when they first spin up). I'll also probably pick up some larger drives and trim the total number of disks. So maybe this is the way to go; do you think this psu is reliable if left on 24/7 ?

300W = overkill

When would you even be running everything under full load?

It doesn't matter. Even if he had the most power-hungry drives available and constantly doing heavy seeks, he'd only use 10W for each.

A fanless platinum 400W Seasonic would be overkill, but it would be a nice unit to get.

I'll probably get the SeaSonic SS-300ET the next time it comes on sale; btw do you know if it has high-quality capacitor? (I hope this is the last psu i have to buy for this system for the next 6 or 7 years).
-
I think I'll wait till julyish and upgrade the mb/cpu to haswell to get the faster graphics and at the same time replace the 4 1tb drives with 2 2tb drives. Hum. I think there will be a low power version of haswell (meant for ultra-books) so that might be the one to go with.

Actually I found an older thread:

that shows the ss-300et uses teapo capacitors

Maybe there is a heat sensor that tells the system is hot or something so it runs constantly at high speed. If all the drives are like stacked on top of each other that makes them like a giant oven.

How are you using the drives? Array or what?

8 drives is a rediculous number. Maybe the number could be reduced with larger drives or you could use slower drives that run cooler. Do you really need the constant access 24/7. You might also get better results by some kind of program that defrags the drives.

What about the Rosewill Fortress 450 Watt? Its a bit overkill on the wattage but it is platinum and has a good warranty.

The BeQuiet PSU sounds nice but > $150 is a big turn off for my needs.

The roswell is more interesting esp since I can pick it up for $60 now or wait until it reaches 45 again; can't find a review on the 450 model but the 750 model has a good review on Jonnyguru site.
